From confusion to expertise: How to ramp up your expertise quickly / Aaron Tay | Professional learning | Scoop.it

"When you work in libraries, learning how to learn is a vital skill. Every new area that emerges means a new struggle to study, understand, experiment and eventually integrate the knowledge into myself.

Having been around the block on this roller coaster many times I can share with you some of the things I find useful for me when coming to gripes to a new area.“

pru's insight:

Aaron Tay hits on such an important part of professional learning - keeping abreast of new areas. So often you can't wait for the definitive external professional learning event to come along, you need to put in the hard work reading, networking and researching for yourself - on top of all the other things you are doing.

20,000 students in the first 24 hours: UK enters MOOC space with social, mobile FutureLearn | Professional learning | Scoop.it

Until last Wednesday, US-based learning platforms have led the development of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Together, those platforms, including Coursera, edX, and Udacity, serve an estimated 3 million learners worldwide with courses from a number of elite partner institutions, such as Harvard and MIT.

But now, in the same week in which edX announced a partnership with Google for the development of a new, open-source online learning system, the UK has launched its own – and its first-ever – MOOC platform: FutureLearn.

13 Questions to Ask When Scoping a Learning Development Engagement

13 Questions to Ask When Scoping a Learning Development Engagement | Professional learning | Scoop.it

All too often, training programs are developed just for training’s sake, just to check the training box. There must be a clear business objective that a training program is attempting to solve. If the business need isn’t there, the program shouldn’t be either.

Nik Peachey's curator insight, May 18, 2014 4:10 AM

This is quite corporate business training directed, but would also apply to any teacher training scenario.

Enrico De Angelis's curator insight, May 18, 2014 5:01 AM

Planning courses for a big US corporation around the world is not the same of a residential three years PhD Program.

Nevertheless, the 13 proposed questions make an interesting reference list.

Are they worth to be considered also in our european PhD Programs and their courses? I think so.

1. The problem we want to solve is to be clearly stated
2. The quality of the training project too ("success")
3. Who pays for the project (this is more difficult, in Academy)
4. The audience composition
5. Their attitudes and expectations (often disregarded)
6. The actual use of the transferred skills
7. How to track their learning engagement
8. How to cope with tools and practices of the audience
9. Flexibility of the training program

10. Existing content and knowledge to be leveraged
11. Resources to be provide
12. Milestones and dates
13. Budget (cost, time, and quality)
