Nine Rules for Stifling Innovation

Nine Rules for Stifling Innovation | Professional development and management skills | Scoop.it
For all the talk about innovation, I see many leaders in numerous organizations in every sector who actively stifle it. They say they want more innovation. But at the same time, they seem to operate by a set of hidden principles designed to prevent innovations from surfacing or succeeding. I've compiled them into a set of anti-rules. Acting in these nine ways guarantees that there will be little or no innovation of any significance, because no one had the time, money, or motivation to innovate:

Study: Emotional Intelligence Affects Worker Engagement

Study: Emotional Intelligence Affects Worker Engagement | Professional development and management skills | Scoop.it
Does emotional intelligence significantly contribute to a manager’s performance and a company’s overall success? One recent study says yes, strongly.

Via Merdrignac Soizic, John Michel, David Hain
John Michel's curator insight, April 29, 10:08 PM

The study found that emotional intelligence—which Six Seconds defines as “a set of skills for understanding and using emotions effectively”—accounted for almost half of an individual manager’s performance level. It also found that emotional intelligence increased organizational engagement, higher organizational engagement achieved higher bottom-line results, and employee turnover dropped 63 percent during the study.

There are mindsets and mindsets. Everyone's capable of creativity - but some animals are more equal than other animals, as it were. Here, a look at the types and mindsets of creativity and how to use them best.

Nat Sones's comment, April 15, 11:12 AM
I think everyone's creative. There. Said it. Now, some are better than others, more disposed to it - just like some are better organisers. It all depends on the kind of organisation you want to foster and the kind of culture you need to initiate to surround and nurture it. As for those qualities? I hope I have all seven...

So as a leader in the business, how do you build trust in your organization? There are four key ways:

~Create Safe Havens – make it safe for people to say what’s really going on in the business

~Share Vulnerability – address key truth statements and establish new behavior ground rules to address those truth statements in a positive way

~Find Swim Buddies – create “partners” to hold each other accountable for behavior changes

~Develop Behavior Scorecards – build behaviors into a business scorecard and develop an ongoing process for measurement and improvement

The Secret and Power of Listening

The Secret and Power of Listening | Professional development and management skills | Scoop.it

Leaders often rise to leadership because they are great talkers. Now it’s in the way.

You can’t connect, communicate or influence without listening. Bad bosses talk. Successful leaders listen.

Via donhornsby

(From the article): Forget about advanced listening skills. Don’t jump to active, critical, or appreciative listening.

Open your ears by closing your mouth.

Look in their eyes and stop flapping your tongue. Leaders are listeners.

Jumping from no listening to advanced listening is like using a dragster for driving lessons. You’ll crash and burn. In addition, going from poor listening to active listening creates paranoia in those around you. “What’s going on?”

The mysteries of the brain are unfolding.  Only a generation ago, we believed that our brains were static and fixed, prone to inevitable atrophy.  Now we are beginning to understand that the brain can rewire itself in remarkable ways. And we are the catalysts!

The not-so-good news is that what often remains – as stagnant and immobile as our brains are not – are the ways we still cling to old ideas about organizational systems that do not maximize human performance.

7 Ways to ReWire Your Brain and Become a Better Leader

7 Ways to ReWire Your Brain and Become a Better Leader | Professional development and management skills | Scoop.it
These 7 practices create incremental changes in the neural structure of your brain and can improve the effectiveness of your leadership and the quality of your life.

Via John Michel, Roy Sheneman, PhD
John Michel's curator insight, February 12, 6:53 PM

Our “fight-flight” reaction and strong memory for painful experiences are hardwired from birth. Our brains detect negative information faster than positive information and are drawn to bad news. This hardwiring is further reinforced as we grow up because our negative experiences leave an indelible trace in our brain.  Thebrain continues to learn and change itself throughout our life.

The good news is we are capable of over-riding our primitive reactions that don’t serve us well, and creating new neural pathways that reduce stress and irritability and generate more happiness and wisdom in our lives.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, March 2, 11:48 AM

The opening lines are about traditional versus collaborative leaders. I think there has always been collaborative leadership. Great leaders through history surrounded themselves not with sycophants but with those who came with questions. Community emerged, trust revealed, and greatness shone through. We need to believe we are not reinventing the wheel. It exists and needs to be dusted off.

DPG plc's curator insight, March 16, 7:08 PM

love this - where do you sit?

Damarque's comment, April 16, 11:05 AM
Ivon makes a good point. Is this not true however for most 'new' business and leaderships ideas. Even with (internet) technology as major disruptor in many industries, the fundamentals of value creation (management/leadership and innovation) have not changed. At the root of all value creation (which is the purpose of business) lies collaboration. The more unique the players in the collaboration game, the more value can be created, provided the game is played according to some key rules of engagement. Yes, collaboration as a powerful concept is not new. Facilitating productive collaboration is a whole different story. Perhaps that is where the challenges and opportunities for new leadership lie.
