David Truss :: 7 Ways to Transform Your Classroom

David Truss :: 7 Ways to Transform Your Classroom | Profeactivo | Scoop.it

David Truss shares his Inquiry Hub model and a Slideshare presentation on the 7 Ways to Transform Your Classroom along with audio recordings of the Classroom 2.0 Show "Inquiry Learning and Empowering Students" on September 29th.  Here is just a glimpse of the 7 Ways to transform your classroom.

> Transforming Classrooms with Inquiry: It starts with educators asking really good questions.

> Transforming Classrooms with Voice: Be it a presentation to a small group, the entire school, the local community or online (with the world), work with students to craft their message in thoughtful, well represented ways.

> Transforming Classrooms with Audience: Through the use of blogs, wikis, digital portfolios and social media tools, you can invite the world to be a participatory audience in the work that our students do.

> Transforming Classrooms with Community: Provide opportunities for projects to extend beyond age-group peers to include younger and/or older students, parents and teachers, community members, subject area experts, and students from around the globe.

> Transforming Classrooms with Leadership: Buddy up with students in younger classes. Create activities and events which truly allow students to ‘run the show’.

> Transforming Classrooms with Play: There is a lot of pedagogy in play (at all ages). Do we provide “gaps” in our teaching? Time and spaces where students can be creative beyond the scope of the content we are teaching?

> Transforming Classrooms with Networks: Skype is a great tool to bring classes from across the country or across the globe together.

Thank you David for sharing your model and vision to transform learning!

Great tips on how to facilitate collaborative learning. Learners that work collaborativley are engaged in their learning and have better learning outcomes.

Marina Cousins's curator insight, April 10, 2014 8:06 PM

I liked this article, as it highlighted to me the importance of collaborative learning is much better than individual learning.  As I have mentioned several times, the learning and assessment that takes place within my workplace has a strong behaviourist foundation of learning and repeating key words and actions to pass an assessment (it is a very individual approach to learning).

Many of my colleagues view this experience of learning & assessment in a negative way.  What are some of the ways to overcome this negative view of learning?

After reading this article, I will seriously consider using a collaborative learning style within my workplace (if I get the opportunity).  The advantage of using real world problems or clinical incidents is that it offers the learner the opportunitity to improve their critical thinking skills and problem-solving ability.

Therefore, by using collaborative learning you can apply the following learning theories of cognitivism, constructivism, objectivism.

Hazel Kuveya's curator insight, April 10, 2014 9:22 PM

Keeping the groups at moderate levels will ensure an effective exchange of ideas and participation in all involved, I can echo the same statement that two heads are better than one. It is also interesting to learn that collaborative teams attain higher level thinking and preserve information for longer periods as compared to  their individual counterparts., yes the use of technology makes collaborative learning manageable.

CEM Forum: It’s Personal

"Personalized learning can feel obviously necessary and impossibly hard to do simultaneously. In this forum, we'll explore paths forward towards personalized learning for both students and educators.

Key Questions

> Right Now: What practical steps can educators take to personalize learning for their students in 2012–13, and how can technology facilitate this?

>The Big Picture: How close are we to being able to realize the dream of personalized, differentiated, passion-based learning for educators and students, and what still has to happen to make this fully real?"

Personalize Learning Newsletter - Motivation, Engagement, and Voice

Personalize Learning Newsletter - Motivation, Engagement, and Voice | Profeactivo | Scoop.it

This has been a very busy fall with many requests for our process to build sustainable personalized learning environments for the Race to the Top - District proposals. On top of that, we are leading webinars, participating in panels, speaking in keynote addresses, doing workshops, creating eCourses, setting up Communities of Practice (CoP), interviewing thought leaders, and important research on motivation, engagement, and voice. This means we continue to create new resources, refine the process, and personalize our services to meet your needs.

Roles change for teachers and learners when personalizing learning in all three stages. Moving to Stage One where learners have a voice and choice takes time, a shared vision, and a Community of Practice (CoP) supporting each other. This chart above provides how roles change for teachers and learners in Stage One.

The research by Tashalis and Nakkula on Motivation, Engagement, and Student Voice from Students at the Center provides a great rationale for learners who have a voice in how they learn and are more motivated and engaged in the learning process. This is about learners having a stake in their learning. We highly recommend reading this research if you plan to personalize learning for your learners.

[Infographic] Today, no longer is having a high school diploma is enough to land a good job and support family. College is key today, but finding the funds to pay for it can be tricky. Brick and mortar institutions cost a fortune, and most have to work while going to school. But for those who can't juggle both, online learning can be a great option.

We know what that you may think this avenue is for slackers, but have a look at our infographic below, and your opinion may just change.

The Connected Learner in a PLE

The Connected Learner in a PLE | Profeactivo | Scoop.it

We are all learners. We are connected to each other and innovative learning experiences that we never thought were possible before. It doesn't matter how old you are, where you live, and what you want to learn, you can connect to people, resources, and courses so you, the learner, can learn what you want when you want to. This means what we call "school" is different. Teachers and learners are different. Roles change. This is a huge culture shift.

The information from our chart Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization chart is about being a Connected Learner in a Personal Learning Environment (PLE).

> starts with the learner

> connects with interests, passions, and aspirations

> learners actively participate in the design of their learning

> learners have a voice and choice on what they learn

> different objectives for each learner

> learner selects appropriate technology and resources to support their learning

> learners build a network of peers, teachers, and others to guide and support their learning

> competency-based models where the learner demonstrates mastery

> assessment AS learning

> teachers develop capacity to create independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning

Discover more about connected learning in this engaging blog!

Teacher and Learner Roles Change in 1:1 Personalized Learning Environments

Teacher and Learner Roles Change in 1:1 Personalized Learning Environments | Profeactivo | Scoop.it

Technology, especially mobile devices, allows learning to feel more personal. Being connected to the content with these devices offers opportunities for anyone to learn anywhere anytime. Yet, just providing technology to learners doesn’t mean that learning is personalized.

Teacher and learner roles change in a Stage One Persoanlized Learning Environment (PLE).

Teacher
- Knows how the learner learns best.
- Redesigns the learning environment.
- Integrates technology.
- Designs assessment strategies.
- Recognizes high-quality resources.

Learner
- Establishes learning goals with teacher.
- Creates a personal learning plan.
- Chooses how to access content.
- Has a voice expressing what they know.
- Selects the way to engage with content.
