My Thoughts: This article applies to me in the sense that dorm life will be my first experience of living independently for an extended period of time. I need tips and tricks to help me stay alive and manage my time efficiently and effectively. Toiletries are expensive, and they are something that I will always need. Whether it’s a toothbrush, soap, contact solution, shampoo, deodorant or whatever else you can think of; it is always a good idea to buy these items in bulk at a warehouse-like-shop such as Costco. In the long run, having these items stocked up in bulk will be beneficial because I won’t have to spend time and money looking, and it will be cheaper.

What Really Matters When Picking a College

What Really Matters When Picking a College | Prioritizing | Scoop.it
Avoid the temptation to place superficial concerns above your critical needs.
Tommy's insight:

as an upcoming college student, i am about to enter an entirely different realm of life. it will be the first time in my life that i will be entirely dependant on myself to stay on track. picking a college is tough, because depending on where i choose, it could completely change my lifestyle. There are alot of factors that one must keep in mind when trying to decide which college is "the one".

Cost - cost is a huge factor in education today. with tuition rates on the climb, it is important for you to make sure you can afford school. Grants and scholarships are both very important factors when paying for college. student loans are always avalible, but shouldnt be used unless nevessary

Academic Reputauion - It goes without saying, some schools are a bit more prestigious than others. Academic reputauion should be compared to tuition costs the school’s ability to get you a job after college.

Size - Size is an important factor in determining a school. there are a few key points that one should keep in mind when looking at large schools. Large schools generally pack a large amount of students in a lecture hall, decreasing personal attention.

Location - although location is not that important in determining a school, one should make sure that they pick a region that they would be content with living in for a extended period of time. make sure you visit your schools of choice, check their dorms, rec centers, all places that will influence your decision.

How to Pick a College Major

How to Pick a College Major | Prioritizing | Scoop.it
Figuring out how to choose a college major can feel overwhelming. Asking yourself these five questions, however, can make things easier.
Tommy's insight:

My Thoughts:  This article was really important to me, because I am going to be going in to college this upcoming school year and I’m not entirely sure what I want to major in. I know that I don’t really need to declare a major for a few years, but you should always look forward into the long term.

Know what you’re good at - knowing what you’re good at is an important factor in picking your major. is there something in school that you always understand the moment you see it? or is there a specific subject that all of your friends always seek out your help for? That could mean something! if you are good at something, then you tend to enjoy it more.

What do you want to do - what are your career goals? Do you want to do it for you, or do you want to do it for somebody else? Make sure you work in college enough to get a good insight about your required job field. Keep in mind that what you major in, and your preparation for a career don’t always have to be the exact same.

What Skills do I want to learn – Pick skills that will remain fun to you; A degree doesn’t do you any good if you end up hating your job and switching careers anyway, so make sure its appealing for the long term. Think in the long term. If you want to open a small business, then take classes in business ethics, marketing, etc... Prepare for the long term, and get the education required to be successful.

What life factors do I need to consider? – you always need to take your life into account when you’re picking a college major. Make sure to pick one that will balance with your family and financial needs. Know what you’re getting into. Is there a career that you want to go in to that may take you away from home for weeks at a time? Make sure to keep external influences in mind in order to make the right decision.
