With Freedom on the Move, historians hope to reveal patterns of escape and capture, while giving anyone the chance to learn about the individual heroism of runaway slaves.

Fascinating look at what fugitive slave ads really tell us.  An example they give - a white slaveowner might mention that the runaway slave is missing a finger.  What does that tell us about their lives?  Great way for students to interpret multiple texts.

Terrific overview not only of how to build text sets, but also what is already available on the LIbrary of Congress website.  I do disagree with what they have as a performance task (it's not a performance task, it's a DBQ), but it still has student outcomes expected, which makes for a very strong lesson.
