Blogging ia a transformational resource for the P-6 teacher that can alter the way student's share resources, learn and has the ability to increase the power of student learning. It sits comfortably in the constructivist theory of learning as it allows students to collaborate and share work. It makes them active participants in their learning. New Revised Version of Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization (PDI) Chart, Ver 3 (Dec 2013)

Jo Blannin - Innovative Learning's insight:

I love this graphic of the difference between Personalisation, Differenctiation and Individulisation. We often use the words interchangeably but as with anything, the language becomes important when you are trying to communicate to people - including teachers.

I've used this with teachers at my school, in small groups, to talk about what it is we are actually doing in the classroom....

In this new version, we have included clarification on Assessment OF, FOR and AS Learning.

>Individualization involves assessment OF learning. This is where summative assessment is grade-based and involves testing to confirm what learners know and do not know.

> Differentiation  involves assessment FOR learning and OF learning. This is assessment that involves time-based testing where teachers provide feedback to advance learning.

> Personalization involves assessment AS learning, FOR learning, and a minimal OF learning. This is where teachers develop capacity so learners become independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning. Assessments are based on mastery.

Beyond Minecraft: Games That Inspire Building and Exploration

Beyond Minecraft: Games That Inspire Building and Exploration | Primary School eLearning | Scoop.it

"The success and popularity of Minecraft in and out of classrooms is no surprise. It’s one of the best examples of the potential of learning with games because it embraces exploration, discovery, creation, collaboration, and problem-solving while allowing teachers to shepherd play toward any subject area."

Check out a selection of games that will help students explore, create, collaborate and more. The six games discussed are:

* Garry's Mod - learn physics as you play

* Kerbal Space Program - another physics game

* Sound Shapes - designed for PlayStation this is a "puzzle game set to a rich musical soundscape"

* DIY - Find instructions to build a wide variety of items and a community that will support you

* STENCYL - learn to program using "blocks of code" that you may snap together and create games that may be played on a variety of platforms

* CodeAcademy - learn a variety of programming language for free

Do you think students should learn to code? If you do then some of these games will provide them with this skill as well as others that we know are part of gaming. You may want to try some of these with your students.

Lectures Didn't Work in 1350—and They Still Don't Work Today

Lectures Didn't Work in 1350—and They Still Don't Work Today | Primary School eLearning | Scoop.it

It’s all about engagement. I’ve heard things like a child’s attention span, in minutes, is equal to their age in years. That’s so not true. If children are engaged in something, they’ll spend hours on it. We have a 6-year-old grandchild who will spend hours working on Legos or Tinkertoys because she’s got something in her mind that she wants to build, and she’ll do it. If children aren’t paying attention, it’s not because of a decreased attention span—it’s because they aren’t given tasks that honor their dominant ways of learning.
