Technology Design Process

This video will introduce you to the Technology Design Process; a process which virtually all forms of technology undergo when being developed
Lucy Wareham's insight:

This video has been produced by a teacher in America but could just as easily be adapted and rerecorded to suit a rural remote area to introduce the technology design process.

In Years 7/8 in ACARA's Technology Curriculum Draft students will:

With greater autonomy, students identify the sequences and steps involved in design tasks. They develop plans to manage design tasks, including safe and responsible use of materials and tools, and apply management plans to successfully complete design tasks.

Classroom Resources

Classroom Resources | Technology Teaching in Remote Rural Primary Education | Scoop.it
Science and Technology K-6 is where students learn about the natural and man made environments by investigating, by designing and by using technology.
Lucy Wareham's insight:

Science and Technology in the Classroom (pdf)

Several teachers show how they implemented selected units from the Department's 'Science and Technology K - 6 Units of work Parts 1 and 2', and how they adapted this resource in their own school setting. This article originally appeared in the Primary Curriculum Directorate newsletter 1997 (Vol 2, No 4).

Two examples from the pdf include:

Unit 1 is for Yr 1/2 where they explore the characteristics of different fibres. They then use their knowledge to design and make woven artefacts.

Unit 3 for a Yr 2/3 class investigates how spaces are designed

for specific purposes. The students build a cubby house from milk cartons.

Google Earth

Google Earth | Technology Teaching in Remote Rural Primary Education | Scoop.it
Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. You can explore rich geographical content, save your toured places, and share with others.
Lucy Wareham's insight:

This program is generally avaliable at most schools. Rural students are able to travel the world from their classroom, putting into perspective where they come from and how their world can be similar or vastly different to other students around the world. This assists with the knowledge and understanding of Technologies and society (ACARA) when thinking about technological designs and how they can be used around the world - not just in their own environment.

An example of how Google earth is used within technology is a lesson that invloves students evaluating land sites that would be appropriate for wind farms. This lesson could be adapted for rural remote Australian students.

Why Eye Contact Still Matters In The Age of Email

Why Eye Contact Still Matters In The Age of Email | Technology Teaching in Remote Rural Primary Education | Scoop.it
Eye contact versus a 140-character tweet. Are your kids still learning proper communication skills, or has social media stunted that development?

Via Dr. Susan Bainbridge
Lucy Wareham's insight:

This article reminds us that within Technology learning, students spend many hours connected to online communication. As teachers of technology we also need to teach the skills of face to face communication. Students may learn these skills by presenting their ideas to their cohort, ensuring they use all methods of communication. This includes body language, tone of voice and visual presentation of themselves. This is a life skill they can use in later life to present their own technology ideas to the world.

Technology creeps into station life - 15/09/2008

Coverage of rural industries and issues.
Lucy Wareham's insight:

Teaching Idea: After reading and discussing the article students could write a written justification on the issue of the use of iPods/MP3s's in the workplace from the perspective of a person working on an isolated outback station.

They could give different arguments for either:

-driving a tractor

-flying an Ag plane

-drafting cattle

-fencing

The students could then draft workplace policies for the use of this technology.

Flat tyres to become a things of the past with airless variety coming soon

Flat tyres to become a things of the past with airless variety coming soon | Technology Teaching in Remote Rural Primary Education | Scoop.it
IT'S not quite reinventing the wheel but it's close. Flat tyres could soon be a thing of the past, the airless tyre is just around the corner.
Lucy Wareham's insight:

This article could provide stimulus for a Technology lesson. Students list the pros and cons of the tyre and how it would be suited to their rural/remote area. Some of the cons could be that mud may get lodged in the waffle design, the initial cost of the tyres may be more expensive. A pro - no more punctures when travelling on dirt roads!

Hi Lucy, My dad has actually put these tyyres on his farm bike. I think this would be a great stimuli for rural students as they are able to connect with the issue. It may also prove useful as the lead up to a further design challenge whereby they need to create a solution to another common farm problem. Great idea!

Simon Haughton shares his inspiring and creative ICT ideas.
Lucy Wareham's insight:

Coding is a rare skill that not enough people understand, especially women. R&R students may not see the relevance in coding but this skill is needed where they live. As the dependance on computers grows we will need more people that can code and recode them. This blog has some great lessson ideas using the Scratch program that allows students to 'play in the Technologies learning area' (ACARA).

20 Examples of Innovative Technology Designs | inspirationfeed.com | Technology Teaching in Remote Rural Primary Education | Scoop.it
Design is everywhere you look, including technology. Every single year we advance in tech with new curvy, sexy, and innovative designs. While temptation to own the new shiny gadget is stocking your brain, it pays off to wait.
Lucy Wareham's insight:

Current examples of technology that could be shared with students so they can see what sorts of technology are being developed. These technologies may not relate to their real world but students need to be aware of the needs and advances in urban areas so they are not left behind their urban counterparts.

A task could be to get students to match designs to contexts.

4.1 Recognise factors that impact on the design of products, services and environments including the role of designers and technologists to meet local community needs (ACARA).

New Inventors - ABC TV

New Inventors - ABC TV | Technology Teaching in Remote Rural Primary Education | Scoop.it
The New Inventors is all about inventions and inventors. The show celebrates the inventiveness and resourcefulness of the human mind, and the determination and hard work of those who dream big dreams, and then slave away to make them real.
Lucy Wareham's insight:

This series was a great example of how anyone can create technology. Many of the inventions were created by rural people who had to develop new technologies to be more productive in their field. Sadly the program is no longer aired but can be accessed here. Here is a link to access a 'New Inventors Unit' that I created for science but could easily be adapted to Technology. http://lwareham136.wordpress.com/resources/
