The tot and his mom, Melissa, participated in sister programs known as Roots of Empathy and Seeds of Empathy.

Both programs are designed to foster emotional competence and social growth in children by following the progress and development of a baby. Seeds of Empathy is the younger sibling of Root of Empathy, specifically geared to preschoolers, encouraging early literacy skills and positive attitudes in children three to five years of age.

Engagement is not a goal it's an outcome

Engagement is not a goal it's an outcome | primary 2 education | Scoop.it

You often hear people talk about how technology is so “engaging” for kids. But that misses the point. It’s not the technology that’s engaging, it’s the opportunity to use technology to create something that is valued by the community and by yourself. Yes, a new device can be entertaining for a while, but when the novelty value wears off, what are you left with?

Empathy: Part Of The New Operating System For Our Modern World

Empathy: Part Of The New Operating System For Our Modern World | primary 2 education | Scoop.it

Empathy has been in the news a lot recently. It has been highlighted as an antidote to school bullying and gun and gender violence, and it has become popular in the business community as a part of user-centered design. More and more, empathy is being recognized as a skill that people need to develop to better shape how society will function in the future.....

When Facebook first launched, its policy was to allow users to report problems, bullying or abuse to Facebook staff. With over one billion users, and an exponentially growing number of interactions, Facebook took a closer look at the problems people were reporting and found they were not so much violations of policies, but rather miscommunications and misunderstandings between members. Facebook responded by investing in teaching its community to be more empathetic, instead of leaving everyone to fend for themselves. How? By coding empathy into its social network, changing the way users interacted online.

How do we teach empathy?

How do we teach empathy? | primary 2 education | Scoop.it

This video is an ad that capitalises on the power of words, particularly in evoking new meanings. The ‘new words’ were obviously more able to evoke empathy from passers-by.

I hear ‘empathy’ a lot lately. Is it a new trend? Why is it even important?

I’ve always valued empathy, particularly because I am so anti-apathy. Empathy is generally understood as the ability to put oneself in someone else’s shoes. Empathy is an act of sharing, understanding and connecting. Being able to feel what someone feels, see what they see, be who they are, albeit temporarily – all help to build relationships. Empathy allows us to say “You matter. I care.” with more depth and meaning.
