Is Your Cost of Sales Too High?

Is Your Cost of Sales Too High? | Pricing | Scoop.it
CEOs are often in the middle of a tug-o-war between sales and finance. The CSO believes the answer to solving the sales problem is increasing headcount. In contrast, the CFO looks at the cost per head, quota attainment and believes cutting heads is the answer. This scenario plays out often as companies review budgets and do annual planning. Does the situation ring true for you? If so, you’re not alone. Oftentimes companies are looking at the wrong metrics and need to broaden the view.

Big Data And The Personalised Pricing Trap - Lifehacker Australia

Big Data And The Personalised Pricing Trap - Lifehacker Australia | Pricing | Scoop.it
Imagine yourself the CEO of a company that mainly sells one product. One of your goals is to maximise profits - how do you do it?
Michelle Reynolds's insight:
This is a great example of how data can be turned into commercial opportunity. Pricing is a tricky business - it's a balancing act. By testing different pricing structures, recording the results & analysing them, organisations can determine best prices for different market sectors, geographical areas, customer types. The Cost of Office For iPad vs. Its Competitors

The Cost of Office For iPad vs. Its Competitors | Pricing | Scoop.it
Microsoft's Office apps for iPad might be free to download, but how much do they cost to actually use? (Office for the iPad is here and free to download, but how much does it 'really' cost?
Michelle Reynolds's insight:
So Office on the IPad. It's certainly been too long coming, but now it's here is it worth it? So what do you think? Is it worth the money? This is a great example of value based pricing. There are some people who will love this app & who are more than willing to pay the 365 subscription fee. However, there are others for whom Office on the IPad is unnecessary so they won't pay. Knowing what to charge people can be difficult for many small business owners. Value pricing is a very useful technique. It does, however, mean that you have to understand your customers. If you are struggling to price your service then take time to ask your customers & prospects about their values. What is it they value from such a product or service? What would it be worth to their business or their lives if they bought it? How much would they be willing to pay for the value they receive? The more you understand your customer, and the more you focus your marketing efforts on the customers who value what you do, the higher your profit will be.

The Challenges and Opportunities for E-commerce in a Big Data World - Qubole

Michelle Reynolds's insight:
Do you own an e-commerce company? Then you'll be familiar with the mass of data that goes through your system on a daily basis. This data can be turned into powerful information you can use to grow your business. Having worked with a number of e-commerce businesses I know just how effective this information can be. For example it can show you: - average order value by client (so you can increase it) - profit per order - how often clients buy - conversion rates - seasonality trends - product popularity These are but a few. A Better Way To Cut Costs - Forbes

A Better Way To Cut Costs - Forbes | Pricing | Scoop.it
A Better Way To Cut Costs Forbes Unlike shared services units that rely primarily on “service level agreements,” P&G's model achieves continuous improvement with such methods as variable pricing and annual performance targets.
Michelle Reynolds's insight:
This is a great article about changing the way you view costs & pricing. The traditional way to view costs is as "fixed" or "variable" costs - those which are static regardless of sales volume and those which change in line with volume (respectively). A more effective way to look at costs is to differentiate those costs which add value to your business (& hence help you differentiate your business from the competition), and those which add no value. The less you spend on those things which add no value to your business, the more you can invest in the costs which enable you to stand out from the crowd. The more effectively you differentiate yourself, the more flexible your pricing will become, enabling you to flex your pricing according to each situation. So have a fresh look at how you spend your cash. You'll be surprised at how quickly you could transform your business.
