State representative Hanohano reprimanded by House Speaker.

House Speaker Joseph Souki says Hanohano was "intimidating" and showed a "lack of respect and courtesy."

Russell Roberts's insight:

Apparently, Hawaii Island state Representative Faye Hanohano has crossed the "line" when it comes to personal behavior on the House floor.  On Thursday, House Speaker Joseph Souki reprimanded Hanohano for her unprofessional conduct during public hearings and threatened to suspend her committee assignments.  Souki wrote a formal letter to the Hawaii Island legislator saying he would remove her from all committee assignments is she continues to be "disruptive, disrespectful or discourteous."  The letter was prompted by an incident in February when a Hawaii Pacific University student told lawmakers that Hanohano berated him as he spoke at a committee hearing on shark fishing.  Souki contends that such behavior by a state legislator "lessened public confidence in the integrity of the House."  Aloha, Russ.

Thanks to the Associated Press and the "Hawaii Tribune-Herald" for the story.

Lava remains stalled outside Hawaii shopping center while breakouts upslope ooze molten rock...
Russell Roberts's insight:

Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Darryl Oliveira says there has been no advance in the lava lobe nearest Pahoa Village.  "But just upslope, the lava remains active on both margins of the flow."  The one breakout that was between 75 and 100 yards behind the main front continued to move slowly.  A number of other breakouts are being monitored on the northern and southern sides of the flow.  The flow "ground to a halt" around 4:30 p.m. Monday, after coming within 200 yards of the Pahoa Marketplace, prompting several businesses in the shopping center to close.  Oliveira tells the "Hawaii Tribune-Herald" that smoke conditions were light to moderate Friday morning, with "a light west wind blowing the smoke in an east/southeast direction through the Pahoa and lower Puna areas."  Aloha, Russ.

White Christmas in Hawaii: Blizzard Blankets Big Island's Mountains in Snow | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
One location that experienced a White Christmas this year is, believe it or not, Hawaii.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Excellent background story of a Hawaii White Christmas from the Weather Channel.  Thanks to high winds and bands of heavy showers  on Christmas Eve, the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa experienced blizzard conditions, with 40 to 45 mph winds and up to 8 inches of snow.  Roads to the summit were closed and residents were advised to enjoy the snow-capped peaks from a distance.  At lower elevations, local folks experienced heavy rain and minor flooding.  Although skiing on Hawaii Island's 13,000 foot + peaks is possible, it's not recommended for a variety of safety reasons.  This satellite photo tells the story.  There was, indeed, a White Christmas in Hawaii.  Aloha, Russ.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Thursday, December 25, 2014 8:32 AM HST (Thursday, December 25, 2014 18:32 UTC)

This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and Webcam images (available at http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/activity/kilaueastatus.php), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). All times are Hawai`i Standard Time.

KILAUEA VOLCANO (VNUM #332010)
19°25'16" N 155°17'13" W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WARNING
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Activity Summary: Kīlauea Volcano continues to erupt at its summit and within its East Rift Zone. A lava flow front consisting of north and south lobes remains active. The front of the lava flow closest to Pāhoa Marketplace remains stalled about 0.6 miles (1.0 km) from the Pāhoa Marketplace. The flow continues to have surface breakouts behind the flow front as of this morning, according to Civil Defense and HVO webcams. Inflationary tilt in the summit began at approximately 3:30 PM on December 24 th.

June 27th Lava Flow Observations: Civil Defense reported this morning that the leading (northern) tip of the active flow has not advanced and is currently about 0.6 miles (1.0 km) upslope from the intersection of Highway 130 and Pāhoa Village Rd. Mapping by HVO geologists on the ground yesterday indicates that flow activity is present behind the inactive front in several areas, including an advancement of 60 yards (55 m) on the flow front’s southern lobe.

Puʻu ʻŌʻō Observations: No significant change in ground tilt has been observed in the past 24 hours and tilt remains flat. All other monitoring data indicate no significant changes at Puʻu ʻŌʻō. The most recent measurement of sulfur dioxide emissions from the East Rift Zone was about 250 tonnes per day on December 19, 2014.

Summit Observations: Inflationary tilt has been recorded at Kīlauea's summit since yesterday afternoon. The summit lava lake level was measured at a depth of 51 m below the rim of Overlook crater yesterday morning. The summit lava lake has shown the usual fluctuations associated with changes in spattering behavior, which are also manifested as variations in tremor amplitudes and gas release. Small amounts of particulate material were carried aloft by the plume. The average emission rate of sulfur dioxide ranged between 5,500 and 7,700 tonnes/day for the week ending on December 23 (see caveat below).
