Sustainable nuclear fusion breakthrough raises hopes for ultimate green energy

Sustainable nuclear fusion breakthrough raises hopes for ultimate green energy | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
Scientists have moved a step closer to achieving sustainable nuclear fusion and almost limitless clean energy

Via Wes Thomas
Russell Roberts's insight:
U.S. scientists working at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have achieved a significant breakthrough in developing sustaining nuclear fusion--something that could generate electricity for centuries to come. The experiement generated more power than the amount of nuclear material used in the so-called "ignitor." Although the goal of generating unlimited amounts of "clean" energy is years ahead, remarkable progress has been achieved in tapping the atom for electric power. I hope this experiment proves successful and doesn't end up like the work on cold fusion. Aloha, Russ.

HVO Kilauea Status

Recent Kilauea Status Reports, Updates, and Information Releases
HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Thursday, December 25, 2014 8:32 AM HST (Thursday, December 25, 2014 18:32 UTC)

This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and Webcam images (available at http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/activity/kilaueastatus.php), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). All times are Hawai`i Standard Time.

KILAUEA VOLCANO (VNUM #332010)
19°25'16" N 155°17'13" W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WARNING
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Activity Summary: Kīlauea Volcano continues to erupt at its summit and within its East Rift Zone. A lava flow front consisting of north and south lobes remains active. The front of the lava flow closest to Pāhoa Marketplace remains stalled about 0.6 miles (1.0 km) from the Pāhoa Marketplace. The flow continues to have surface breakouts behind the flow front as of this morning, according to Civil Defense and HVO webcams. Inflationary tilt in the summit began at approximately 3:30 PM on December 24 th.

June 27th Lava Flow Observations: Civil Defense reported this morning that the leading (northern) tip of the active flow has not advanced and is currently about 0.6 miles (1.0 km) upslope from the intersection of Highway 130 and Pāhoa Village Rd. Mapping by HVO geologists on the ground yesterday indicates that flow activity is present behind the inactive front in several areas, including an advancement of 60 yards (55 m) on the flow front’s southern lobe.

Puʻu ʻŌʻō Observations: No significant change in ground tilt has been observed in the past 24 hours and tilt remains flat. All other monitoring data indicate no significant changes at Puʻu ʻŌʻō. The most recent measurement of sulfur dioxide emissions from the East Rift Zone was about 250 tonnes per day on December 19, 2014.

Summit Observations: Inflationary tilt has been recorded at Kīlauea's summit since yesterday afternoon. The summit lava lake level was measured at a depth of 51 m below the rim of Overlook crater yesterday morning. The summit lava lake has shown the usual fluctuations associated with changes in spattering behavior, which are also manifested as variations in tremor amplitudes and gas release. Small amounts of particulate material were carried aloft by the plume. The average emission rate of sulfur dioxide ranged between 5,500 and 7,700 tonnes/day for the week ending on December 23 (see caveat below).

Here's the latest lava flow update from The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.  Aloha, Russ.

Puna Geothermal Venture plans new well.

Project is part of an effort to maintain production levels.

Russell Roberts's insight:

Source:  Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

Reporter:  Tom Callis.

The Director of Hawaiian Affairs for Ormat, the parent company of Puna Geothermal Venture, says PGV will drill a new geothermal well to maintain production levels.  Mike Kaleikini added that drilling could begin as early as January 2015 and " take about three months to complete." Kaleikini stated that the new well is intended to make up for decreased production at one of its five operating production wells and "bring output up to 38 megawatts...it's currently producing 30 mgw." Kaleikini said the new well could be between 4,000 and 8,000 feet deep, depending on where a geothermal resource is found.  Aloha, Russ.

Pahoa Marketplace in Hawaii is under threat from a lava flow from Mount Kilauea. How are locals coping with the danger?
Russell Roberts's insight:

Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Darryl Oliveira says the June 27 lava flow remains stalled, while breakouts continued upslope.  The closest breakout was approximately 50 to 100 yards from the flow's distal point.  Oliveira added that the lava flow activity is not expected to present an immediate threat to the Pahoa Marketplace, located about 0.4 miles from the stalled front.  Oliveira said it's possible the closest breakout could eventually "overtake the stalled front if it remains active."  Aloha, Russ.

As part of its charitable holiday campaign, Cards Against Humanity gave out part of a Maine island.
Russell Roberts's insight:

A popular adult card game known for its crude sexual jokes has bought an island in a Maine lake and named it Hawaii 2.  Cards Against Humanity, LLC bought Birch Island in St. George Lake for around $200,000 and is selling one-foot-square parcels of land as a fundraising event over the holidays.  This reminds me of those companies selling one-square-foot plots on the moon during the 1960s.  A great gag gift, I suppose.  Aloha, Russ.

Russell Roberts's insight:

If the data cited in this report from MIT are true, then we are in deep trouble.  More scientific studies are linking herbicide use with various behavioral problems in children.  Perhaps it's time to reconsider the use of these toxic chemicals on our crops.  There must be a better way to control insect pests than spraying Roundup on our fields.  Aloha, Russ.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Blizzard Warning for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Winter has finally come to the upper reaches of Hawaii Island. According to "West Hawaii Today" reporter Bret Yager, "The Big Island's two summits are braced for Hawaii's answer to that proverbial howling nor'easter--with winds of more than 90 mph expected to drive up to a foot of snow hard into the mountain faces by today."  Temperatures on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are expected to dip to 23 degrees F by tonight.  Both summit areas are under blizzard warnings,  and summit roads were closed Tuesday as a strong upper atmosphere disturbance prepared to engulf the peaks.  Forecasters warned that cold winds, lightning, and drifting snow "were combining to create llife-threatening conditions for anyone trying to drive or hike to the summit of Mauna Kea."  Aloha, Russ.

German car manufacturer BMW is the latest company to recall vehicles with defective driver's-side airbags.  The equipment is made by Takata Corporation of Japan--a company that supplies the bulk of air bag devices for cars and trucks.  Apparently, the weak link in the protective system is the inflator, which is subject to failure in humid conditions.  BMW joins Honda, Ford, Toyota, and a host of other car makers in recalling the bags.  Aloha, Russ.
