Honolulu teenager, shot by cop, arrested on attempted murder charges.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Here's an update of that shooting incident at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu.  According to the Associated Press, a Honolulu police officer shot a 17-year-old runaway in the wrist Tuesday morning after teen cut one officer with a knife and punched two other officers.  State Department of Education spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said the boy showed up at Roosevelt High School, where officials recognized him as a former student, but wasn't registered for classes for the current semester.  Police arrived at the school and tried to take the teen into custody, but he lunged at them in a small office.  The teen reportedly punched two officers, then attached a third officer with a kitchen knife, causing minor wounds on his body.  One of the officers fired two shots, hitting the boy once in the wrist.  The boy was hospitalized in serious condition.  The boy was arrested on suspicion of  three counts of  attempted murder.  Aloha, Russ.

Believe It Or Not, This Is Actually Lava

Believe It Or Not, This Is Actually Lava | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
As the Puna lava flow remains mostly stalled near the town of Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii, visitors up the slope of the Kilauea volcano can still witness some pretty impressive geologic phenomena.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Fascinating article from the "Huffington Post" about "Pele's Hair"--the "glistening, golden threads...of fragile volcanic fiberglass" that sometimes accompany a volcanic eruption.  When lava is ejected into the air and wind gusts pick up the droplets of molten rock, you get the ideal conditions to create "Pele's Hair."  Volcanologist warn visitors not to touch the sharp threads of volcanic fiberglass, because the glass can embed itself in your skin, causing a painful wound.  Aloha, Russ.

The technology works, but surviving harsh ocean conditions and securing funding has proved tough.

Via Wes Thomas
Russell Roberts's insight:

Thanks to environmental reporter Wes Thomas for this story.  Wave power is being used in a limited way in France, but, as the article states, harsh ocean conditions and restricted funding limit the availability of this technology.  Perhaps some of the ocean thermal energy experiments being conducted at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii near the Kailua-Kona International  Airport can be modified to incorporate Wave power technology.  It's worth a try, considering Hawaii's dependence on imported oil to generate electricity.  Aloha, Russ.

Eruption Information Update For Thursday January 29th At 7:15 AM

This is an eruption and lava flow information update for Thursday January 29th at 7:15 AM.

This morning’s assessment shows that the original flow front and south margin breakout remain stalled. The breakout along the north side of the flow continues to be active and widening, however showing no signs of advancement. The leading edge or front of this breakout has not advanced since Monday morning and is located approximately 0.36 miles from the area of Highway 130 to the west or mauka of the Pahoa Police and Fire Stations. Two other breakouts along the north margin located 1-1.5 miles further upslope or behind the flow front showed little activity and no signs of advancement. A number of other breakouts along both margins of the flow and within the flow pad were observed however all current activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities. The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory are maintaining close observations of the flow. Residents and businesses down slope will be informed of any changes in flow activity and advancement.

Smoke conditions were light with a light south wind blowing the smoke in a north/northeast direction. Smoke conditions may increase in some areas and individuals who may be sensitive or have respiratory problems are advised to take necessary precautions and to remain indoors. No brush fire activity was noted this morning and fire conditions will be monitored closely.

The public is reminded that the Public Lava Viewing area at the Pahoa Transfer Station is closed today to conduct a school education program. The public viewing area will be opened tomorrow Friday January 30 and Saturday January 31st and will be closed effective Sunday February 1st to allow for the restoration and return to normal solid waste collection operations. We apologize for this inconvenience and thank everyone for your patience and understanding.

On behalf of the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency and our partners we would like to thank everyone for your assistance and cooperation.
