Russell Roberts's insight:

The Hawaii Tourism Authority is looking for a contractor to handle planned marketing campaigns in Latin America.  Until recently, Latin America hasn't received as much promotional emphasis as Japan, China, and Taiwan.  This could be a good source of visitors to Hawaii.  Aloha, Russ.

Rape ads shock University of Hawaii applicants - Hawaii News Now

Rape ads shock University of Hawaii applicants - Hawaii News Now | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
A new, eye-opening ad campaign is attacking the University of Hawaii on social media and UH officials are concerned this could have a negative impact on applications.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Disturbing as the anti-rape campaign may be for UH-Manoa officials, the issue must be addressed.  Student assaults are a major problem on many college campuses, including UH-Manoa.  Protecting students and providing a safe learning environment should be top priorities of university officials.  It's also incumbent on students to protect themselves and learn how to avoid dangerous areas in and around the UH-Manoa campus.  This is an "inconvenient truth" that must be faced.  Aloha, Russ.

Hawaii's breaking news leader.
Russell Roberts's insight:

"Disturbing" is the least of UH-Manoa's problems. NCAA sanctions against the UH-Manoa men's basketball team could really hurt the university as a whole. Someone wasn't doing their job.  I guess responsibility and accountability are foreign to some people.  Aloha, Russ.

A situation that should never have happened.  What were these people thinking?  The coach has been suspended, a student's wrestling option has been lost, and the police are involved. Another case where common sense has been lost.  Be careful for what you wish for.  Aloha, Russ.

Chicago, NYC, Hawaii Compete to Host Obama Library - US News | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON (AP) — Three U.S. cities that President Barack Obama once called home are trying to outdo one another as the competition to host his future presidential library comes to a close.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Let  the competition begin.  The Barack Obama Foundation will do an in-depth review of sites proposed for President Obama's Presidential Library.  Proposals have been submitted by two universities in Chicago and one each from Honolulu and New York City.  By the end of March 2015, we will know where President Obama will store the records of his administration.  Each city has presented ambitious plans for the library, which include prime real estate and state financial support.  Even if the library is sited in one city, the President could add research facilities or a foundation headquarters in another city.  President Bill Clinton took this route when he left office.  Aloha, Russ.

State audit finds Hawaii Health Connector not sustainable - Hawaii News Now

State audit finds Hawaii Health Connector not sustainable - Hawaii News Now | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
Hawaii's auditor says inadequate planning at the Hawaii Health Connector led to an unsustainable health exchange.
Russell Roberts's insight:

What else is new?  The report from the state auditor confirms what many state legislators already knew--namely, the Hawaii Health Connector suffered from inadequate planning, non-competitive bidding practices, and non-allowable expenses for its executive officers.  Add to this mix a thoroughly botched computer enrollment program, and you have an accident waiting to happen. It simply amazes me that the public and our state legislature tolerate such behavior and negligence.  Now, a massive overhaul of the health insurance system must be done to comply with federal regulations. Three guesses who has to pay for this comedy of errors--namely, the taxpayer.  Thoroughly disgusting!  Aloha, Russ.

Could Slot Machines Fund Hawaii Airport Upgrades? - Honolulu Civil Beat

Could Slot Machines Fund Hawaii Airport Upgrades? - Honolulu Civil Beat | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald has this item regarding “amusement concessions” stands — a form of gaming — at Hawaii airports. Excerpt:
Giving international travelers one last chance to spend money before they leave Hawaii, state Rep.
Russell Roberts's insight:

I get a big kick out of seeing all the attempts to "sugar coat" the issue of legalized gambling in Hawaii.  Everyone is dancing around the "elephant in the room" and pretending that easy to digest words will disguise the truth of the matter.  If the state wishes to implement legalized gaming to raise revenue, just say it and be done with it.  Look what the federal government tried to do with prohibition--that idea was dead on arrival, despite Eliot Ness and the Untouchables.  Prohibition just added more income to the criminal syndicates operating in most major U.S. cities. By legalizing certain activities and charging a "sin tax", the state and federal government could at least recoup some of their financial losses.  It's nearly impossible to legislate morality or human behavior--so why not tax it?  Of course, those who run gambling junkets to Las Vegas won't like this idea, which translates into fewer gambling trips to "Sin City."  Perhaps, that is the real reason why legalized and offshore gambling never gained traction in Hawaii.  I'm off my soapbox now. Aloha, Russ.

UH men's basketball team charged with serious NCAA violations - Hawaii News Now | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
After waiting months to hear from the NCAA, the University of Hawaii learned some very significant news Friday regarding an investigation into the men's basketball program. ...
Russell Roberts's insight:

Another embarrassing moment for the UH-Manoa Athletic Department.  We don't need this kind of publicity.  It makes you wonder who's running the show.  At the very least, this violation package from the NCAA is disturbing and shows a lack of responsibility and due diligence of taxpayer money on the part of the university. But, then again, we live in an age where social responsibility, morality, and accountability have been left behind for the pursuit of the "almighty dollar."  I guess this outrageous incompetence is par for the course.  Aloha, Russ.
