Waimea Middle School wants buses.

Bus purchase would equal additional money for classrooms.

Russell Roberts's insight:

Source:  Stephens Media Hawaii.

Reporter: Erin Miller.

Waimea Middle School officials tell reporter Erin Miller that the school could save around $60,000 a year if it bought two school buses, rather than contract out for transportation services through the state Department of Education.  Following a Friday night fundraiser, Principal Matt Horne said contributions have been coming in towards the school's $120,000 goal, "because every penny the school saves on transportation means more money for the conversion charter school's classrooms." Horne is siding with an independent evaluation team's report that says "it's in the classrooms...where "the most changes can be made to improve student achievement."  Aloha, Russ.

Earthquakes signal Mauna Loa may be waking up
Hawaii News Now
University of Hawaii volcanologist Michael Garcia says the earthquakes suggest that Mauna Loa is waking up but that it could be months before it does anything.
Russell Roberts's insight:

According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on the planet, is rumbling a bit more these days and showing signs of "awakening" for over a year.  HVO seismologist Wes Thelen tells "Hawaii Tribune-Herald" reporter that an eruption isn't imminent, and no warnings have been issued, but  the "mountain is going through the same motions that it did before its 1984 and 1975 eruptions." Thelen adds that "All the signs are there that tell us that magma is moving into the shallow system."  The volcano could be more destructive than Kilauea, and could "threaten a much larger area."  In the past 3,000 years, Mauna Loa has erupted on average every five to six years.  Thelen believes "that may just mean we are due."  Aloha, Russ.

Hawaii OKs lease for Sand Island homeless camp
Hawaii News Now
HONOLULU (AP) - A Hawaii board has approved the lease for a temporary encampment for homeless people in Honolulu. The lease for the voluntary encampment on Sand Island was okayed Friday.
Russell Roberts's insight:

It appears as if the city of Honolulu will build a "voluntary encampment" for the homeless on Oahu's Sand Island.  This area was once the site of a World War II internment camp.  Is this the wave of the future for the homeless?  Perhaps this is a cautionary tale for all of us.  Shades of 1984!  I understand that something has to be done about the homeless issue, but is this the way to do it?  If I had the answer, I would give it.  Any suggestions?  Aloha, Russ.

While Climate Central's interactive tool (displaying the average temperature cities across the U.S. are expected to reach by 2100) did little to make those of us suffering a sweltering summer feel optimistic about the future, the interactive graphic at the link provides some perspective that current temperatures could be worse.

I usually cringe when mainland U.S. newspapers recommend scenic spots to visit in Hawaii.  The reports tend to overstate what is basically a simple, enjoyable natural setting.  But, this time, I'll have to back off a bit.  "The Los Angeles Register" has done an excellent job of portraying the wonders and beauty to be found at the mid-level  facility of Mauna Kea.  A trip to the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Center is well worth the effort.  The rangers and staff at the facility are available daily, 9 a.m. to  10 p.m., for tours and observations with telescopes set up on the Center's lanai (patio).  On a clear night, the view is literally "out of this world."  Be sure to bring a jacket or sweater with you, as it tends to be cool at the 9,200-foot elevation. Sand Island named site for temporary homeless settlement.

Area was once used as an internment camp during World War II.

Russell Roberts's insight:

Source:  Associated Press (Honolulu).

A Hawaii board has approved the lease for a temporary encampment for homeless people in Honolulu.  The lease for the voluntary encampment on Sand Island was approved Friday. Honolulu officials say the  camp should be operational in two to three months.  They envision a triage center where homeless families can access services.  Critics say homeless people are being shooed out of sight to go to a dry, isolated area away from their communities.  Parts of Sand Island have been used as a dump and as an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II.  The island is now mostly industrial and has a wastewater treatment plant and some parks. Some area residents and companies are concerned about security, but officials say the camp will have two guards onsite around the clock.  Aloha, Russ.

Hawaii road crews preparing for approach of lava | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
PUNA, Hawaii (AP) — Road crews on Hawaii's Big Island have begun clearing access roads in case a lava flow from a nearby volcano cuts a main highway.
Russell Roberts's insight:

According to "Hawaii Tribune-Herald" reporter Colin M. Stewart, the lava flow threatening Pahoa Town and nearby subdivisions has shifted to a more northerly direction over the weekend and showed signs of slowing down between Friday and Sunday.  The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the flow had traveled about 270 meters/300 yards since Friday, suggesting that the flow advance rate may have slowed over the past several days.  As Lower Puna residents prepared for a possible lava incursion within the next two weeks, "a number of large bulldozers busily cleared Railroad Avenue between Hawaiian Paradise Park and Hawaiian Beaches.  County workers have been readying since Thursday the partially unpaved roadway as an alternative exit for residents should the lava encroach upon Highway 130."  Aloha, Russ.
