Hawaii Breaking News - Coconut rhinoceros beetle prompts pest emergency as concerns spread - Hawaii News - Honolulu Star-Advertiser | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
Hawaii's breaking news leader.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Rob Curtis Curtis and his 40-member crew of invasive species monitors have a tough job ahead of them.  They are trying to eradicated the coconut rhinoceros beetle in Hawaii, an invasive insect that could destroy most of the state's coconut trees, bananas, sugar cane, and other crops. So far, the team has deployed 2,700 traps and surveyed 100,000 coconut trees for damage.  Most of the infestations have been confined to three sites, all on military reservations.  Curtis says eradication is possible, only if he gets the resources needed to trap and remove the insects from Hawaii's trees.  Curtis is getting some help from the mongoose, which often eats the beetle grubs that fall from infected trees.  The mongoose is also an invasive species that presents its own problem.  Aloha, Russ.

Surfers caught inside monster wave while seeking thrills in Hawaii

Surfers caught inside monster wave while seeking thrills in Hawaii | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
Big-wave surfers chase extreme thrills at Peʻahi, a Hawaiian hotspot known for massive waves.
Russell Roberts's insight:

While experienced surfers tried to master the monster waves at the "Jaws" spot on Maui,  Hawaii Island surfers tried out the higher than normal surf along the Kohala and Kona coastlines.  On Saturday, the Hawaii Fire Department used a helicopter Saturday morning to rescue a surfer from high waves at Hapuna Beach.  The beach was closed because of several days of high surf.  The call came in around 8:30 a.m. that a surfer had been separated from his board and initially tried to swim to shore through the breakers.  Two helicopters responded to the beach along with six ground units.  A rescue swimmer went into the water from one helicopter, and firefighters used a "Billy Pugh" net to lift the surfer to safety. The surfer was not injured.  Aloha, Russ.

Surf pounds, damages Big Island shoreline - West Hawaii Today

Surf pounds, damages Big Island shoreline - West Hawaii Today | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
State and county parks officials were assessing damage to recreation areas and cleaning up debris as high surf continued to pound beaches and close roads in West Hawaii on Thursday.
Russell Roberts's insight:

As this photo taken at Hawaii Island's Hapuna Beach attests, heavier than normal surf has taken its toll.  According to "West Hawaii Today" reporter Bret Yager, two national parks and parts of Kawaihae Harbor sustained major water damage from recent heavy waves along the north and west shores of Hawaii Island.  Persistent waves of 12 to 18 feet damaged the concrete wharf a Mahukona Beach Park.  At Kawaihae Harbor, surf tore planks off docks, damaged railings , and broke a water line. Kaloko Road and the beach area at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park reopened Friday after waves caused extensive damage to the kuapa wall at Koloko Pond.  Acting Chief of Interpretations at the park, Jon Jokiel, said "over half of the 800-foot wall is in pretty bad shape."  Many West Hawaii beach parks remained closed Friday and a high surf warning remained in effect until 6 p.m. today (Saturday).  Aloha, Russ.

Hawaii is #1 when it comes to the homeless population in each state, according to the Movoto real estate blog.
Russell Roberts's insight:

A dubious distinction at best.  Good investigative reporting from KITV-4 News.  No one seems to have a real solution to the problem, other than warehousing the homeless on Sand Island or shipping them back to the U.S. mainland at taxpayer expense.  Perhaps, the recently convened state Legislature can find a workable, humane solution to this seemingly unsolvable problem.  Aloha, Russ.

Measles outbreak casts spotlight on anti-vaccine movement - Hawaii News Now | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
A major measles outbreak traced to Disneyland has brought criticism down on the small but vocal movement among parents to opt out of vaccinations for their children.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Measles can be a serious disease for children and often fatal to adults. No vaccine is 100 percent effective, but  to deny health protection for your family with a treatment that can save lives borders on ignorance, superstition, and neglect.  I feel sorry for the children contracting this disease because of their parents' negligence.  Aloha, Russ.

Big Island waste-incinerator opponent loses county contract - Hawaii News Now

Big Island waste-incinerator opponent loses county contract - Hawaii News Now | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
A Big Island recycling nonprofit whose leadership has spoken out against the Hawaii County mayor's waste-incineration plans has lost a long-held recycling education contract.
Russell Roberts's insight:

According to "West Hawaii Today" reporter Nancy Cook Lauer, a planned waste-to-energy incinerator on Hawaii Island is a dead issue. Citing uncertainty about oil prices and instability in the ownership of the state's electric utility, Mayor Billy Kenoi on Friday "yanked the plug on a proposed waste-to-energy- incinerator."  That project created an "intense community debate"  that "will not be picked up again during the remaining two year's of Kenoi's term."  Reporter Lauer added that "if it had gone forward, the more than $100 million project would have been the county's most expensive public works project in history." Rather than take a huge financial risk, Mayor Kenoi said he will concentrate on diverting more waste from the county's two landfill.  He will also work to get a state permit to steepen the slope of the existing Hilo landfill, a process Kenoi said would "add eight to 10 years to its lifespan."  Aloha, Russ.

Bill proposes slot machines for international travelers at Honolulu airport

Bill proposes slot machines for international travelers at Honolulu airport | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
A state lawmaker wants to bring slot machines to Honolulu International Airport.
Rep. Cindy Evans (D-North Kona, North Kohala, South Kohala) introduced a bill Friday that would provide slot machines for departing international passengers.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Hawaii Island state representative Cindy Evans introduced House Bill 91 to allow slot machines at the Honolulu International Airport for the use of departing passengers only.  Evans says the slot machines would be operated like any other airport concession, such as restaurants.  Evans says 85% of the profit would go to the state, while the remaining 15% would go to the concessionaire. As I mentioned earlie, the state is looking for additional sources of tax revenue, and this slot machine idea would fit into that category.  What do you think about this idea?  Aloha, Russ.

Russell Roberts's insight:

This special tax break for real estate companies owning money producing properties in Hawaii could soon end if measures introduced by House Finance Committee Chairwoman Sylvia Luke and Hawaii State Senate President Donna Kim are passed by the Hawaii State Legislature.  The state is looking for additional sources of revenue, and this tax loophole is a prime candidate for closing. Hawaii drivers applaud lower prices at the pump - KITV Honolulu

Hawaii drivers applaud lower prices at the pump - KITV Honolulu | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
Happy thoughts are echoed by drivers across the state as gasoline prices continue to drop.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Although lower fuel prices are nice and give a big break to motorists, the relief will be temporary.  Any upheavel in the Middle East could disrupt oil exports and cause a price increase.  Whether Saudi Arabia will continue to let oil  prices fall after the death of King Abdullah is unknown.  Granted, our imports of foreign oil are declining, but the nation still imports a huge portion of its energy supplies from unstable regions of the world.  Research into alternate fuels must continue. This is a matter of national security. Hawaii should be building its own strategic oil reserves, so, if an oil shortage develops, we will have an energy "cushion" to help mitigate a possible energy shortage.  Aloha, Russ.
