The Republican nominee for governor of Hawaii stepped to the podium at a fundraiser for the state GOP, greeted by cheers and a standing ovation.
Russell Roberts's insight:

The Hawaii gubernatorial race will be a tough grind for anyone entered in the race, whether it be Democrat, Republican, or Independent.  Former Lt. Governor Duke Aiona, a Republican candidate for governor, has an outside chance of winning the election.  Much of this election depends on just how motivated the voting public is.  Voter apathy has increased over the past few years, with some races getting less than 50 percent turnout from voters.  Aloha, Russ.

GMO papaya disclosure stopped temporarily.

Judge Greg Nakamura issues a preliminary injunction.

Russell Roberts's insight:

Source:  Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

Reporter:  Tom Callis.

On Tuesday, Hilo Circuit Court Judge Greg Nakamura issued a preliminary injunction stopping Hawaii County from disclosing the identity and specific location of farms growing genetically engineered papaya.  According to reporter  Tom Callis, the order "allows the county to maintain a registry of genetically modified organisms, but prevents information that could identify papaya growers from being released publicly."  Callis says two growers of GMO papaya challenged the requirement that they register with the county, saying "it would expose them to vandalism or other forms of economic harm."  Another concern was that Hawaii County lacked clear rules regarding what information it would release to the public as part of the program.  Aloha, Russ.

Pesticides Put Global Food Production at Grave Risk

Pesticides Put Global Food Production at Grave Risk | PRG HAWAII NEWS WITH RUSS ROBERTS | Scoop.it
Recent report reveals that pesticide regulations have failed to prevent poisoning of almost all habitats, thus putting global food production at great risk.

Via Wes Thomas
Russell Roberts's insight:

According to new research from an international task force, "it has become increasingly obvious that large-scale, chemical-based agriculture is posing an outright threat to the world's food supply.  Its dangers now far outweigh any benefits that might be had in terms of efficiency."  The unusually blunt report indicates that overuse of certain pesticides can trigger autism in children, lower IQ and induce poorer cognitive functioning in children, and increase the risk of attention problems in young children.  The research was conducted worldwide, including farming areas in the United States.  A very sobering analysis of how slow release toxins are endangering the world's food supply.  Aloha, Russ.

UH-Hilo College of Pharmacy retains accreditation.

Russell Roberts's insight:

Source:  Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

Reporter:  Colin M. Stewart.

Here's some good news for the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy---the American Council for Pharmacy Education has found the school to be compliant with all 30 of its accreditation standards.  The University of Hawaii at Hilo college passed the final requirement when the state Legislature appropriated $33 million for a new building for the program.  According to reporter Colin M. Stewart, Dean John Pezzuto warned "that the longer legislators waited to fund a building, the more danger the fledgling program would be in regards to losing its accreditation...."  Pezzuto said that should legislators fail to fund a building for the program this year, "that would be equivalent to pushing us off the cliff, and we would be in a freefall."  Now that funding for the building has been approved, the College of Pharmacy "must complete a self-study due by September, to be followed by an onsite visit in October 2014."  The results of the visit and continuing of accreditation will be reviewed at the next ACPE Board meeting in January 2015.  Aloha, Russ.

New report addresses Hawaii's housing crisis, saying prices are out of reach ...
Russell Roberts's insight:

The report confirms the obvious--you can't afford to live in Hawaii.  According to the report on Hawaii's "affordable housing crisis", rents in the state increased 45 percent between 2005 and 2012, while wages increased by just 21 percent.   The authors of the report say affordable housing is defined "by spending 30 percent of an income or less on housing."  That means in order to afford the $1,640 fair market rent for a 2-bedroom unit, one would have to earn $31.54 per hour.  The average wage in Hawaii is $13.86 per hour.  You can see where this is headed.  The law of supply and demand is exacting a heavy toll on those who live here. However, there is plenty of lower-priced housing on Hawaii Island.  In fact, many homes in several Puna District areas are going for less than $200,000.  The only catch is the lack of high paying jobs on Hawaii Island and the restricted amount of public services available, including water, police /fire protection, medical care, and transportation.  It's really a no win situation unless you're willing to make adjustments to your life style.  In my opinion, affordable housing is largely a myth in Hawaii.  Aloha, Russ.

Underwater photographer and marine biologist Terry Lilley has been shooting video and taking photographs of dead and dying coral off Kauai's north shore, including Hanalei Bay.
Russell Roberts's insight:

Two supposed "heavyweights" in the music business, singer Usher and manager Scooter Braun, are supposed to be guiding this young man's career.  Instead, Bieber behaves like a wild child, destroying property and behaving like a preschooler who wet his pants.  After his arrest on misdemeanor vandalism charges, a toxicology test revealed the presence of marijuana and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax in the singer's blood system.  Why hasn't someone held his management team partly responsible for Bieber's outbursts?  Perhaps, it's all for naught, anyway.  Bieber's popularity has been sinking for the past few years.  Such  a waste of talent.  Aloha, Russ.

Oahu housing prices set new record.

Home prices up to $700,000 and condos get $360,000.

Russell Roberts's insight:

Source:  Associated Press (Honolulu).

So much for "affordable" housing.  According to the Associated Press, housing prices on Oahu hit record levels in June thanks to an improving economy and tight supply.  The median cost for a single-family house was $700,000, eclipsing the June 2007 record of $685,000.  Condominium prices reached a new high of $360,000 in June, topping the previous record of $359,450 set in February.  According to the Honolulu Board of Realtors, the gains in the state's biggest residential market "are fueled by low interest rates, rising personal income and job growth."  Meanwhile, the Board says "there's relatively little new housing and fewer people selling existing homes."

Comment:  Apparently, there are enough people with real money to afford these homes and condos.  I'm not one of them.  Of course, there's always the inconvenient problem of homelessness, which is getting worse in the state.  As mentioned in my introduction, affordable housing is a myth.  We surely pay the price of "paradise."  Aloha, Russ.
