Friday's jobs report shows how wrong wall street's professional economists can be | Fiduciary Wealth Partners | Scoop.it
As usual, economic projections were never in doubt but proved to be wrong.
Preston McSwain's insight:

I don't have a crystal ball, but I am confident about one thing: The financial media will continue to write headlines based on economic forecasts from economists and analysts, and many of those forecasts will turn out to be wrong.

Fees and Charges That Destroy Investors' Portfolios

Fees and Charges That Destroy Investors' Portfolios | Fiduciary Wealth Partners | Scoop.it
No investment or advising comes without fees, but they can be reduced if you know learn the ropes.
Preston McSwain's insight:

Understand Investment Total Fees and What You Are Really Paying For

When working with brokers and investment advisors, take time to understand your total fees as compared to the value you are receiving for investment management.

"Many clients don't understand what they're really paying for. As an example, investors think they are paying high fees for the manager," says Preston McSwain, managing partner and founder of Boston-based Fiduciary Wealth Partners. "However, in reality they are often paying high fees for the broker-dealer business platform, marketing, sales management and commissions to brokers."

What's an investor to do?

"Ask a lot of questions, especially about business models — how a firm makes money — and about what incentives drive your advisor's compensation," McSwain says. In other words, "Learn how your broker gets paid on various products and services."

Preston McSwain's insight:

What Would Yale Do If It Was Taxable?

Yale is among the finest learning institutions in the world.  It’s known for many great things, but in the investment world, it’s probably best known for its top performing endowment, which many try to replicate with what’s called an “endowment model.”  What can individual investors learn from the Yale endowment?  Maybe how to not invest if you have to pay taxes.

What types of investments should more UHNW investors use to try to achieve solid returns like Yale?

The evidence continues to point to index funds.

A Word to Brokerage Executives: About That Pay Cut…

A Word to Brokerage Executives: About That Pay Cut… | Fiduciary Wealth Partners | Scoop.it
Rather than chipping away at compensation formulas, brokerages should focus on improving their services for brokers and clients, our columnist says.
Preston McSwain's insight:

Fiduciary Wealth Partners and Preston McSwain profiled in the Wall Street Journal by Norb Vonnegut

"Fiduciary Wealth Partners, a Boston-based RIA with $1.5 billion under advisory, fees generally range from 0.25% to 0.50%. At Baker Street Advisors, a San Francisco RIA with approximately $6 billion in assets, average fees are under 0.50%. Both firms favor passive investments, which minimize the overall asset expenses of their clients.

Speaking on behalf of FWP, where he is the managing general partner, Preston McSwain says, 'If we keep our investment solution simple, the running of the business is simple.' He explains that his firm’s passive approach enables its financial advisers to focus on goals-based planning for clients." - Norb Vonnegut

As Vonnegut mentions, Wall Street should focus more resources on improving experiences for both advisors and clients.

It is hard for many to believe what the evidence shows: that index funds outperform most actively managed strategies.  I spent the majority of my career selling active investment management and I wish it was not so, but that is what the numbers show.  Many in the industry are now saying, Say It Ain't So.
