World Heritage Centre - Main Andean Road - Qhapaq Ñan

World Heritage Centre - Main Andean Road - Qhapaq Ñan | Preservation of Indigenous Ethnobotanical Practice | Scoop.it

Qhapaq Ñan otherwise known as the Main Andean Road, was the backbone of the Inca Empire’s political and economic power. The whole network of roads over 23,000 km in length connected various production, administrative and ceremonial centers constructed over more than 2,000 years of pre-Inca Andean culture.

The Incas of Cuzco achieved this unique infrastructure with a unitary character in less than a century, making it functionally coherent and establishing additional centers for commerce, exchange, production and worship, adapting production sectors to topography and climate, in each ecological area to be found along the Road. The Road also expressed these peoples’ harmonious relation with and their adaptation to the complex Andean natural setting. Today, the cultural landscapes of Qhapaq Ñan form an exceptional backdrop on which living Andean cultures continue to convey a universal message: the human ability to turn one of the harshest geographical contexts of the American continent into an environment for life.

Mass compulsory inpatient treatment has been presented as a solution for the problems resulting from crack cocaine abuse. This policy is not supported by research in the health literature and is an affront to constitutional rights.
ICEERS Foundation's insight:

ICEERS supports this campaign, proposing Brazil to follow the model of New Zealand where Ibogaine became a prescription medication, offering integrated Ibogaine therapy, aside from harm reduction and drug education initiatives. Efficient solutions are needed, not repressive measures that do not solve anything and imply a great cost to society.

Psychoactive ubulawu spiritual medicines and healing dynamics in the initiation process of Southern Bantu diviners. Sobiecki JF.[J Psychoactive Drugs. 2012 Jul-Aug]

Abstract
The use of psychoactive plants by traditional healers in southern Africa appears to be a neglected area of ethnobotanical research. This article explores the healing dynamics involved in the use of popular psychoactive plant preparations known as ubulawu in the initiation rituals of Southern Bantu diviners. Research methods include a review of the literature, fieldwork interviews with Southern Bantu diviners, and an analysis of experiential accounts from diverse informants on their use of ubulawu. Findings reveal that there is widespread reliance on ubulawu as psychoactive spiritual medicines by the indigenous people of southern Africa to communicate with their ancestral spirits--so as to bring luck, and to treat mental disturbances. In the case of the Southern Bantu diviners, ubulawu used in a ritual initiation process acts as a mnemonic aid and medicine to familiarize the initiates with enhanced states of awareness and related psychospiritual phenomena such as enhanced intuition and dreams of the ancestral spirits, who teach the initiates how to find and use medicinal plants. The progression of the latter phenomena indicates the steady success of the initiates' own healing integration. Various factors such as psychological attitude and familiarization, correct plant combinations/synergy and a compatible healer-initiate relationship influence ubulawu responsiveness.

The Penan ETnobotanical knowledge

The Penan in the various settlements have varying degrees of familiarity and knowledge of ethnobotany. It is sad to state that for those communities that had direct contact with the outside world through logging and palm oil plantation activities, the younger generation might not be familiar and might lose their ancestral knowledge of the usage of plants for medicinal and cultural purposes. All is not lost however, if the older generation educate their children on the cultural significance of retaining their traditional ethnobotanical knowledge. The Penan elders at Long Latei’, Long Kevok, Long Lewe’ and Ba Data Bila still retain the knowledge on the usage of traditional medicinal plants but if the knowledge is not passed on, then it will slowly fade away forever. Below is a list of plants which are part of the ethnobotany of the Penan encountered in the various settlements:

Differences of values, attributes and conceptual frameworks between Western medical science and indigenous healing traditions is fascinating to me; diagnostic criteria, 'bed-side manners' and cures rest on totally different  notions regarding the body, illness/sickness/disease, well-being and of course, Nature.
