As content takes its rightful place at the forefront of marketing, I'm seeing many marketers fail at basic storytelling.
Marketers are ineffective when they use the classic "customer testimonial" format and pop that onto their blog or make it into a video. "Here’s our product. It is great. Here are customers who say it is great. Now buy some of our product." This just doesn't hold people's attention.
How interesting would a book or movie be were it to have this plot?: Boy meets girl. They fall in love. They get married.
That's what most people do with their business writing.
The best stories drip with conflict. They have a hero and sometimes a villain. There is a story arc. As a writing teacher once told me: "Writing without conflict is propaganda."
Body Language and non-verbal indicators and movements have the biggest impact (55%) when communicating and these can be good, bad and ugly depending on what you do!! So your presentation can be memorable for great reasons or not so great depending on how you communicate non verbaly….so this is a key area to pay attention to. This picture shows just a few areas you need to consider when presenting. Get someone to observe and give you feedback and see where you excel and where you might need to develop to engage the audience more.
Vocals e.g. the tone of your voice, the pitch, intonation, pace, speed and sound account for 38% of how we communicate compared to 7% Words and 55% Non Verbal e.g body language. This is just a sample of ideas from group work at one of my workshops where we discuss and share ideas of how we can maximise and use our vocals to get the best impact. Great work guys!

Anyone who has been on one of my courses will know I make an effort to remember names, and for me this is important and in some training sessions we play a game and everyone gets to rememeber each persons name! Great fun and so useful and personal too. These top tips are a fabulous reminder of whats important.
Words account for just 7% of how people perceive us when we communicate, so I hear you say “they don't even listen to what I am saying"! Sadly this is true so we have to make sure what we say is spot on, clear, meaningful, jargon free, appropriate, simplistic and impacting. However when we get our words and language right and linked to good story telling, supported with amazing vocals and effective and memorable visuals the overall presentation will leave your audience with a memorable message.
