Ciuffreda, K. J., & Rosenfield, M. (2015). Evaluation of the SVOne: a handheld, smartphone-based autorefractor. Optometry and Vision Science, 92(12), 1133.

Purpose: The SVOne is a portable Hartmann-Shack wavefront aberrometer that can be attached to a smartphone to determine the refractive error of the eye objectively. The aim of the present study was to compare the findings of the SVOne with retinoscopy, subjective refraction, and two commercially available autorefractors (Topcon KR-1W and Righton Retinomax-3).

Conclusions: The results indicate that the SVOne handheld aberrometer provides measurements of refractive error in normal, young individuals that are not significantly different from other subjective and objective procedures. This instrument is valuable for vision screenings, as well as examinations taking place outside the clinical office. It may also serve as an adjunct in the standard optometric examination.

A review of the surgical options for the correction of presbyopia

A review of the surgical options for the correction of presbyopia | GEA-Grupo de Estudios AEOPTOMETRISTAS | Scoop.it

Gil-Cazorla, R., Shah, S., & Naroo, S. A. (2015). A review of the surgical options for the correction of presbyopia. British Journal of Ophthalmology, bjophthalmol-2015.

Abstract

Presbyopia is an age-related eye condition where one of the signs is the reduction in the amplitude of accommodation, resulting in the loss of ability to change the eye's focus from far to near. It is the most common age-related ailments affecting everyone around their mid-40s. Methods for the correction of presbyopia include contact lens and spectacle options but the surgical correction of presbyopia still remains a significant challenge for refractive surgeons. Surgical strategies for dealing with presbyopia may be extraocular (corneal or scleral) or intraocular (removal and replacement of the crystalline lens or some type of treatment on the crystalline lens itself). There are however a number of limitations and considerations that have limited the widespread acceptance of surgical correction of presbyopia. Each surgical strategy presents its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. For example, lens removal and replacement with an intraocular lens may not be preferable in a young patient with presbyopia without a refractive error. Similarly treatment on the crystalline lens may not be a suitable choice for a patient with early signs of cataract. This article is a review of the options available and those that are in development stages and are likely to be available in the near future for the surgical correction of presbyopia.

AEOPTOMETRISTAS's insight:

Este artículo es una revisión de las opciones disponibles y las que se encuentran en etapas de desarrollo y es probable que estén disponibles en un futuro próximo para la corrección quirúrgica de la #presbicia.

Half‐dose photodynamic therapy followed by diode micropulse laser therapy as treatment for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy: evaluation of a prospective treatment protocol. Acta ophthalmologica.

Abstract

Purpose

To evaluate the outcome of a prospective protocol for the treatment of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).

Methods

Interventional prospective case series in 59 eyes (59 patients) with active chronic CSC. All patients were first treated with indocyanine green angiography (ICGA)-guided half-dose photodynamic therapy (PDT). In case of persistent serous subretinal fluid (SRF) after a follow-up period of at least 6 weeks, ICGA-guided PDT was repeated. If the SRF persisted after two PDT treatments, additional ICGA-guided high-density subthreshold diode micropulse laser (HSML) therapy was performed. Clinical evaluation included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundoscopy, OCT, fundus autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography and ICGA.

Submacular hemorrhage in neovascular age-related macular degeneration: A synthesis of the literature

Submacular hemorrhage in neovascular age-related macular degeneration: A synthesis of the literature | GEA-Grupo de Estudios AEOPTOMETRISTAS | Scoop.it

Stanescu-Segall, D., Balta, F., & Jackson, T. L. (2016). Submacular hemorrhage in neovascular age-related macular degeneration: A synthesis of the literature. Survey of ophthalmology61(1), 18-32.

Abstract

Large submacular hemorrhage, an uncommon manifestation of neovascular age-related macular degeneration, may also occur with idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. Submacular hemorrhage damages photoreceptors owing to iron toxicity, fibrin meshwork contraction, and reduced nutrient flux, with subsequent macular scarring. Clinical and experimental studies support prompt treatment, as tissue damage can occur within 24 hours. Without treatment the natural history is poor, with a mean final visual acuity (VA) of 20/1600. Reported treatments include retinal pigment epithelial patch, macular translocation, pneumatic displacement, intravitreal or subretinal tissue plasminogen activator, intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs, and combinations thereof. In the absence of comparative studies, we combined eligible studies to assess the VA change before and after each treatment option.

AEOPTOMETRISTAS's insight:

Ambos tratamientos tuvieron un perfil de seguridad aceptable, pero la mayoría de los estudios fueron pequeños, y se necesitan grandes ensayos controlados aleatorios para determinar la seguridad y eficacia.

Thurman, S. M., & Lu, H. (2016). A comparison of form processing involved in the perception of biological and nonbiological movements. Journal of Vision,16(1), 1-1.

Abstract

Although there is evidence for specialization in the human brain for processing biological motion per se, few studies have directly examined the specialization of form processing in biological motion perception. The current study was designed to systematically compare form processing in perception of biological (human walkers) to nonbiological (rotating squares) stimuli. Dynamic form-based stimuli were constructed with conflicting form cues (position and orientation), such that the objects were perceived to be moving ambiguously in two directions at once. In Experiment 1, we used the classification image technique to examine how local form cues are integrated across space and time in a bottom-up manner. By comparing with a Bayesian observer model that embodies generic principles of form analysis (e.g., template matching) and integrates form information according to cue reliability,

Kiorpes L,  Mangal P. (2015). “Global” visual training and extent of transfer in amblyopic macaque monkeys. Journal of vision15(10), 14-14.

Abstract

Perceptual learning is gaining acceptance as a potential treatment for amblyopia in adults and children beyond the critical period. Many perceptual learning paradigms result in very specific improvement that does not generalize beyond the training stimulus, closely related stimuli, or visual field location. To be of use in amblyopia, a less specific effect is needed. To address this problem, we designed a more general training paradigm intended to effect improvement in visual sensitivity across tasks and domains. We used a “global” visual stimulus, random dot motion direction discrimination with 6 training conditions, and tested for posttraining improvement on a motion detection task and 3 spatial domain tasks (contrast sensitivity, Vernier acuity, Glass pattern detection). Four amblyopic macaques practiced the motion discrimination with their amblyopic eye for at least 20,000 trials.

Corneal nerves can be adversely impacted by a variety of ophthalmic and systemic conditions,1 and there is a commensurate requirement for tests of corneal structure and function that have good diagnostic capability. A number of important advancements in the clinical assessment of corneal nerves have emerged over the past two decades. Corneal confocal microscopes, which became available in the early 1990s, allowed corneal nerve structure to be assessed through viewing of the subbasal nerve plexus, at around ×500 magnification.1 Techniques for assessing nerve function,

Tarun Arora,a Shveta Jindal Bali,b Vishal Arora,a Meenakshi Wadhwani,a Anita Panda,a and Tanuj Dadaa,

Hammond, B. R. (2015). Foveal Morphology and the Macular Carotenoids.Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science56(13), 7866-7866.

Primate foveas have several features that are relatively unique. One is the paucity of anterior vasculature in an area in which photoreceptor density, and hence metabolic activity, is strongly peaking (declining in number exponentially as one moves from the foveola). This area is called the foveal avascular zone (FAZ). Another is the dramatic accumulation of dietary carotenoids, specifically lutein and zeaxanthin, also strongly peaking in the very center of the fovea (called macular pigment [MP]). This accumulation can be as high as 1000 times the amount in serum for some individuals (the highest accumulation of carotenoids in the body) or nearly indetectable for others.

AEOPTOMETRISTAS's insight:

Los datos por Balaratnasingam  son un buen recordatorio de que la arquitectura de la #fovea no se basa en un conjunto de variables independientes, sino más bien en un complejo conjunto de características que interactúan. #retina
