For the 25 years I've been working with struggling teens, I've always had the working theory that a major part of the problem is they needed to grow up (similar to the idea behind emotional intelligence but more a lay perspective).  This need has been referred to as "emotional growth" and seems almost always a part of the problem with young people making poor decisions, and sometimes is the major problem. -Lon
