While local organisations continue to tackle diversity issues along the lines of race, gender, sexual orientation and physical disability, there is another often overlooked element that is very much part of the diversity mix - that of age diversity.

Do I just Google that? Tools for Teaching Search Skills in the Primary Classroom « ICT for Teaching & Learning in Falkirk Primary Schools | Preparing Students for 2020 | Scoop.it

Nowadays many pupils, when given a research task, immediately might think to themselves, “I’ll just Google that.” Internet search engines are powerful tools but many pupils use only a fraction of the power of them, and then can also have difficulty finding the information specific to the task. There are many resources now available to help in developing pupil skills in searching more effectively using online search engines.

Why School? TED ebook author rethinks education when information is everywhere

Why School? TED ebook author rethinks education when information is everywhere | Preparing Students for 2020 | Scoop.it

The Internet has delivered an explosion of learning opportunities for today’s students, creating an abundance of information, knowledge, and teachers as well as a starkly different landscape from the one in which our ideas about school were born. Traditional educators, classrooms, and brick-and-mortar schools are no longer necessary to access information. Instead, things like blogs and wikis, as well as remote collaborations and an emphasis on critical thinking skills are the coins of the realm in this new kingdom. Yet the national dialogue on education reform focuses on using technology to update the traditional education model, failing to reassess the fundamental model on which it is built.

Our Storytelling Minds: Do We Ever Really Know What’s Going on Inside? | Preparing Students for 2020 | Scoop.it

Our minds form cohesive narratives out of disparate elements all the time: one of the things we are best at is telling ourselves just so stories about our own behavior and that of others. If we’re not sure, we make it up – or rather, our brain does, without so much as thinking about asking our permission to do so.

Google Art Project is an interactive website that uses the same street view technology you've probably seen in Google Maps to allows visitors to virtually explore museums and view hundreds of pieces of art. Even better, visitors can view them at incredible zoom levels to get even closer than you could if you were actually standing in front of the original painting. Visitors can even create and share their own collection of masterpieces.

The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture for Tinkering and Maker Education

The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture for Tinkering and Maker Education | Preparing Students for 2020 | Scoop.it

It is a model in which authentic, often hands-on, experiences and student interests drive the learning process, and the videos, as they are being proposed in the flipped classroom discourse, support the learning rather than being central or at the core of learning.

Carlos Lizarraga Celaya's curator insight, July 3, 2013 1:20 PM

I see the power of engaging kids in science and technology through the practices of making and hands-on experiences, through tinkering and taking things apart. Schools seem to have forgotten that students learn best when they are engaged; in fact, the biggest problem in schools is boredom. Students sit passively, expected to absorb all the content that is thrown at them without much context. The context that’s missing is the real world.

Learning by doing was the distillation of the learning philosophy of John Dewey. He wrote: “The school must represent present life—life as real and vital to the child as that which he carries on in the home, in the neighborhood, or on the playground.”
