Why Digital Learning Is Here To Stay

Why Digital Learning Is Here To Stay | Prendi Digital Citizenship, Social Issues and RE | Scoop.it
Digital learning is coming whether people like it or not. The new standards call for it. Twenty-first century readiness requires it. Future jobs rely on it. There is no doubt that educational technology has the power to motivate kids, so why not harness that passion in the K-12 classroom? There are many reasons why digital learning has arrived and is here to stay.

The fact that many districts use "brute force" filtering is a contradiction to the the new push for increased broadband. We need a huge instructional initiative to be embedded in the FCC's erate update. What good is increased broadband in our schools and students and teachers can't get through filters.

3 Ideas for Teaching Digital Citizenship in 2014 | Prendi Digital Citizenship, Social Issues and RE | Scoop.it

In 2014, take some time to help your students become responsible digital citizens. And remember, you don’t have to teach a course in digital literacy. You can simply integrate tools like Twitter, encourage your students to archive their best work through the creation of a blog, website, or portfolio, or help students add the skills they have developed in your course to their digital resumes.

Melissa Marshall's insight:

Interesting - the perception is that young people know all about technology - but they don't. They need to be taught in steps or through inquiry, just like with everything else. They may be very good at adding selfies to Instagram or procrastinating on Facebook, but when it comes to research, evaluating sources and locating very specific information, their strategy of 'just Google it' does not hold up.

"But in an increasingly connected and digital world, the things a student needs to know are indeed changing—fundamental human needs sometimes drastically redressed for an alien modern world. Just as salt allowed for the keeping of meats, the advent of antibiotics made deadly viruses and diseases simply inconvenient, and electricity completely altered when and where we slept and work and played, technology is again changing the kind of “stuff” a student needs to know."

The Year We Broke the Internet | Prendi Digital Citizenship, Social Issues and RE | Scoop.it
An explanation. An apology. A plea.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

A very interesting article on Big Viral - the way in which shareability is trumping truth on the Internet. Seems like whatever you like is clicked and shared - and apologised for later if it proves false. Remember the snow on the Sphinx? Yes, it did snow in Egypt - but just a dusting and nowhere near the iconic landmark. A doctored photo is far more impressive.

What impact does this have on kids who share? How can we teach them to find the false - even when society doesn't let truth get in the way of the story?
