Why Teachers Matter More in a Flipped Classroom - by Jon Bergmann

Why Teachers Matter More in a Flipped Classroom - by Jon Bergmann | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it

"The reason Flipped Learning makes teachers more valuable is that it changes the dynamic of the classroom.  No longer is content delivery the focus of the class, nor is the teacher’s main responsibility the dissemination of knowledge. Instead, teachers take on the role of a facilitator of learning.  They are able to work with students in small groups and have more one-on-one interactions.  The simple act of removing the direct instruction (lecture) from the whole group changes the dynamic of the room and allows the teacher to personalize and individualize the learning for each student. Each student gets his/her own education which is tailored to his/her needs.  Instead of a one size fits all education-each student gets just what they need when they need it."

Via Jim Lerman
Melissa Marshall's insight:

This is often something I am asked to explain when it comes to why i flipped my classroom - 'But doesn't it mean you have nothing to do?' Yes, it has meant a bit more preparation. Yes, I have to think carefully about how to differentiate, how to lead, how to learn with kids. Yes, it is tiring.

But, I get to talk to every kid in every class, every day, This is why I love it - it lets me connect to all kids, not just the overly confident ones or the struggling ones. This is why it is one of the few teaching philosophies I have tried, and not dropped. Every child. Every day. In a secondary school, what can beat that?!

PeterT's curator insight, January 21, 2014 2:33 AM

This set of 10 questions to ask before you flip your teaching assumes that video is the core alternative content delivery method. I think that is too narrow. i also question whether most teachers should aim to create videos - stick to curating videos created by others (it's quicker and the quality will be better).

The point re needing to teach your students how to watch a video is critical - and part of the reason why having a list of videos is not sufficient. You need the wrap around (text?) that frames the video, focuses the students' attention, and gets them to do something (like note key points) after watching the video (i.e. Distance learning materials not just videos).

The need to communicate with stakeholders is also vital, as is the question about what you will do with your face to face (aka class) time.

While many virtual environments have incredibly upside for role-play and immersive learning, Minecraft epitomizes a vital ingredient for so many children, the role of "making." I think there's an instinctual need to do so. Perhaps it's even what best defines us as humans from other species. And so, a vital aspect of all the platforms I use with Heritage Christian Online School is that they have a readily usable building aspect to them. "So, what are QR Codes, you ask?  Well, you know what barcodes are,  like when you buy something at the store and the clerk scans a code to enter the item and amount into the till?  The QR (Quick Response) Code is kind of like that, except that it offers much more information.  Quite often the QR Code will give you a link to a website, or a text message, image, etc.  To read the QR Code, you need to install a QR Code Reader onto your device.  There are many available for free.  I like using i-nigma, seen below. Simply open the app, point it at a QR Code and your device will do the rest.  Try it with the code above.  It should take you back to this blog."
