ClassDojo

ClassDojo | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it

ClassDojo is a classroom management app that allows students to keep track of positive and negative 'points'. Students love its bright and clear interface - there is also a student app to allow them to see where they are at!

Melissa Marshall's insight:

I use ClassDojo for managing infringements and providing positive feedback to younger students. The Year 7s still love customising their avatars and checking feedback. I find it easier than using Traits in SEQTA and much more interactive.

You can import your class list in then throw it up on the projector to prompt students to do the right thing!

Why Teachers Matter More in a Flipped Classroom - by Jon Bergmann

Why Teachers Matter More in a Flipped Classroom - by Jon Bergmann | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it

"The reason Flipped Learning makes teachers more valuable is that it changes the dynamic of the classroom.  No longer is content delivery the focus of the class, nor is the teacher’s main responsibility the dissemination of knowledge. Instead, teachers take on the role of a facilitator of learning.  They are able to work with students in small groups and have more one-on-one interactions.  The simple act of removing the direct instruction (lecture) from the whole group changes the dynamic of the room and allows the teacher to personalize and individualize the learning for each student. Each student gets his/her own education which is tailored to his/her needs.  Instead of a one size fits all education-each student gets just what they need when they need it."

Via Jim Lerman
Melissa Marshall's insight:

This is often something I am asked to explain when it comes to why i flipped my classroom - 'But doesn't it mean you have nothing to do?' Yes, it has meant a bit more preparation. Yes, I have to think carefully about how to differentiate, how to lead, how to learn with kids. Yes, it is tiring.

But, I get to talk to every kid in every class, every day, This is why I love it - it lets me connect to all kids, not just the overly confident ones or the struggling ones. This is why it is one of the few teaching philosophies I have tried, and not dropped. Every child. Every day. In a secondary school, what can beat that?!

PeterT's curator insight, January 21, 2014 2:33 AM

This set of 10 questions to ask before you flip your teaching assumes that video is the core alternative content delivery method. I think that is too narrow. i also question whether most teachers should aim to create videos - stick to curating videos created by others (it's quicker and the quality will be better).

The point re needing to teach your students how to watch a video is critical - and part of the reason why having a list of videos is not sufficient. You need the wrap around (text?) that frames the video, focuses the students' attention, and gets them to do something (like note key points) after watching the video (i.e. Distance learning materials not just videos).

The need to communicate with stakeholders is also vital, as is the question about what you will do with your face to face (aka class) time.

The original Macintosh's interface helped open classroom doors to computers.

Via EDTC@UTB
Melissa Marshall's insight:

Ah, look at that Apple Macintosh. The first computer I ever used in the back of the Year 4 classroom. You could do Paint drawings on it and print them on a dot-matrix printer. Computer time was only when you had finished your work. Now, I look at the students clutching their iPad Airs and I am shocked to think that one day they will look back on an iPad with the same antiquated fondness that I have for the Macintosh.

The iPad will be the 'oldest' and 'worst' technology they will ever use.

I adore this.

Why is Australia's national curriculum moving more towards a one-size-fits-all model when we know many of these skills are not even used in adulthood? Where is the differentiation?

We don't learn like this as adults and yet we ask our students to 'grin and bear it.' As an adult, I will learn when I need to and when I have the motivation. Right now, I am motivated to learn Excel formulae because I have an assignment due in a couple of weeks!
