What’s Lost as Handwriting Fades

What’s Lost as Handwriting Fades | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it
Even as the emphasis shifts to the keyboard, experts say that learning to write by hand improves motor skills, memory and creativity.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

This article from the NY Times illustrates what happens in our brains as we learn to write by hand. There is still a place for teaching legible handwriting beyond Year 2 - because, in Year 12, they still have to master 3-hour written exams. And write - for the rest of their life, hopefully.

Text Compactor: Free Online Automatic Text Summarization Tool | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it

Text Compactor

Via kathy pryor
Melissa Marshall's insight:

This is a brilliant little tool that would work effectively for differentiation. The student follows the link, pastes in the text and sets a slider to determine the level of difficulty/summarisation needed. This can be, say, 30% of the original text summarised instead of having to read the whole 100% at a level unsuitable for them. The student can then find the level of summarisation that works for them.

kathy pryor's curator insight, June 10, 2014 9:22 PM

This “free online automatic text summarization tool” was created by Knowledge by Design, which produces products for students with disabilities. The user plugs in a paragraph of nonfiction, sets a slider to the percentage of text that should remain, and the newly shortened or summarized text appears in another window. Websites like TweenTribune offer content at multiple levels of difficulty. This means the learner must assume the role of Goldilocks and determine which text is just right, given their purpose for reading, background knowledge and skill level.”

Via Bonnie Bracey Sutton, Ivon Prefontaine
Melissa Marshall's insight:

This is an interesting article about the investigation of the high-performing Finnish schools, and the fact that their classrooms are fairly low-tech (particularly given that we are spending a lot of money each year on edtech). It seems that the teacher is still the defining element in the classroom, regardless of which technologies students have access to.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 31, 2014 1:33 PM

Digital technology and, for that matter, any tool are not the key to teaching and learning. The relationships which exist between teachers, students, and subject matter are essential. Teaching is about being aware and making sound decisions in choosing the best tool for the right situation. What if we invested money in smaller classroom size and less in the digital technologies?

Mikko Hakala's curator insight, June 1, 2014 3:58 AM
