Melissa Marshall's insight:

Oh fantastic. I have been reading journal articles about resilience and overparenting today, and the need for kids to experience and grow from failure is so apparent. Yes - sometimes it all falls apart and that is okay. Plus, anything Rube Goldberg is going to be amusing to say the least!

Melissa Marshall's insight:

An interesting article explaining the benefits of using tablets. I find it is still very effective to get kids to WRITE on paper and ACCESS content using their device. It helps them remember and keeps their recording skills - some of the weaker students lose their train of thought in the switch between apps on the iPad.

Joplin High School's journey of disaster to recovery after the May 2011 EF-5 tornado that destroyed the school and much of the town. Assistant Superintendent Dr.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

This article touches on something close to my heart. We visited Joplin, MI on the 2nd anniversary that marked the day that one-third of this thriving community was destroyed by a tornado. On our same trip, we also experienced the horror of a tornado first hand in Oklahoma City.

This article discusses Joplin's vision for education for its students and how they are embracing technology and new learning spaces - sometimes by force, but often by choice. Not long before the tornado they held a forum on 21st century education. It is a wonderful thing to see, and I pray they succeed!

Digital Reading Skills | Delta Publishing - English Language Teaching

Digital Reading Skills | Delta Publishing - English Language Teaching | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it

We take it for granted as English language teachers that we need to develop our students’ reading skills, but in most cases the nearest our students get to reading online is a printed version of a web page pre selected by their teacher. At best they may actually get to see a pre selected page on the screen of a computer, but is this enough to really develop their digital literacies?

The 21st century is challenging old notions of learning spaces

The 21st century is challenging old notions of learning spaces | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it

Classrooms should be spaces that students don’t want to leave.  Some communities are still hesitant about these futuristic looking learning spaces and have resorted to older, traditional physical spaces. Hopefully, they will begin to embrace changes to better prepare students and move them in the 21st century global economy.

Schools and the learning spaces within them should be engaging and attractive places for children in which to learn. Outside of their home, school is where they spend a significant portion of their lives.
