A local software firm is educating students and teachers alike about the benefits of this emerging technology.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

Makers Empire have designed and tested software for 3D printers in schools that is so simple, Year 1s can do it. We are now at the inflexion point where this technology can be readily accommodated into the classroom without a lot of specialist knowledge to drive it.

We're educating our youth into unemployment: Dan Haesler

We're educating our youth into unemployment: Dan Haesler | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it
Despite long-term unemployment in Australia being at a 16-year high, little acknowledgement is given to fact that the school system isn't preparing these kids for the "real world".
Melissa Marshall's insight:

This article appeared in the Age yesterday and gives clear evidence why education needs to change. I saw Dan speak at the EduTECH conference in Brisbane, and he has some excellent ideas on what is happening in schools, and why the approach to learning is currently deficient.

Dozens of Alternatives to YouTube

Dozens of Alternatives to YouTube | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it

Over the last few years I've seen more schools opening up access to YouTube, at least to teachers, than I had in the past. YouTube for Schools has partially contributed to that trend. Tools like ViewPure and Watchkin have made using YouTube videos in schools a little less scary too. All that said, there are still lots of schools that block access to YouTube. That's why a few years ago I started to maintain a list of alternatives to YouTube.

If you are having trouble accessing Youtube or the videos load slowly, here are some alternatives where you might find that video instead.

Extra Credits - How Games Prepare You for Life - Education: 21st Century Skills - YouTube

Games give players agency and teach the core 21st century skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity better than any tradition...
Melissa Marshall's insight:

Hoe does gaming build 21st century skills like collaboration, communication and critical thinking? What is the link to help teachers use games in the classroom?

We often get caught up as teachers with students who are not doing the right thing with their iPads - and students have to be taught how to use the technology well. But, when they can use the tech as learning AND entertainment, they will retain their learning more effectively.

I love the idea of it and am searching for ways in which to build gaming into a class - so the students do not even realise they are learning.

I have been using bitly for years to shorten links for students. Instead of writing the long version of the link on the board or even putting it in Coneqt, this way reduces error and gets them to where I want them to be on the web. Bitly can also collect a bunch of links and then you can distribute them to others with one short link.

Joanne Orlando explains the reasons why tech may be hindering our memory in this article featured on Stuff NZ.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

We are now reading more than ever (3 times more since the 1980s) and have access to more infomation than ever before. What is this doing to our memories, and are we really better off handwriting our notes? I type notes, just for the ease I have with then rearranging, sorting and sharing them. This article is about learning how to work well and prioritise our attention.

An educational tale of youth, energy and freedom to learn

An educational tale of youth, energy and freedom to learn | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it
Schools are about herding students in the one direction, but for born innovators and entrepreneurs it is a culture clash that often stymies their creativity and saps their energy.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

Innovation seems at odds with schools at the moment - although there have been some great steps forward. What might help foster a community of innovation at your school, so that the best minds find it a space to grow, rather than one they have to leave? The story above illustrates this choice and gives recommendations to schools.

Virtual classroom lets students stay at home

Virtual classroom lets students stay at home | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it
An experiment in virtual learning for students at Nossal High School has proven successful and will be expanded.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

This article was written to explain a trial in which students stayed home during two full school days. In the day, the teachers taught virtual classes in real time, took a roll and interacted with students via discussion boards. The trial has been a success - the Victorian education department is now taking notice. What this does make me think about is the still-crucial role of the teacher with the students, and the less reliance we have on actually being in the same geographical location. Hmm!

Is Education Technology Frivolous? - Weekly Genius

Is Education Technology Frivolous? - Weekly Genius | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it
This week, over here in the UK, a headteacher decided that money being spent on ‘fad’ iPads could have been better spent on teachers. Eight thousand teachers, he reckoned, could have been paid for if it wasn’t for wasting all that money on all that fancy technology. Not that he’s against technology, you understand. It has its place – in IT lessons. So, there, in a nutshell, the cultural obstacle to the wholesale adoption of technology on schools… the idea that spending on tech is frivolous; that tech belongs only to certain subjects; that there’s a choice – robots or

Twine: this is a new online software application that allows you to write clickable adventure stories using a sticky-note grid. This will be PERFECT for a python programming project where students need to plan a story before coding.
