Let the kids play their video games, it's good for them! | Prendi eLearning - Education, Technology, iPads... | Scoop.it
But, thanks to a growing body of research, momentum is building behind video games and their legitimacy as tools for learning.

"Research has found that video games encourage hands-on learning, critical thinking and collaboration," Dr Curwood said. "In addition to that, they motivate children and young adults to explore new content, develop new literacy skills and engage in self-directed learning, and this occurs both in school and out-of-school contexts."

The use of video games is covered in the new Australian curriculum and is recognised as an effective way of engaging students.

Bianca Hewes, an English teacher at Davidson High School, has introduced a video game elective for Year 9 students and next month the school will hold a video games appreciation day.

Via Kim Flintoff
Melissa Marshall's insight:

I have been doing some research in game-based learning and there is a lot to suggest that gaming has a positive effect on critical thinking and problem solving. As with anything, it it to be taken in moderation, but if it engages students we should be looking at ways in which inclusive and useful games can be incorporated into the curriculum. Even mining companies use game-based learning to help their employees become more motivated about  issues such as safety and risk assessment!

Students live in an information saturated world. The most effective way to keep them safe and using the internet responsibly as a learning tool is to teach them how to be their own filters.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

FINALLY, this has been said. What is the point of restricting access to the point that children do not know what to do if they encounter content that is not for them? While we need to protect young children, we also need to allow older kids to make choices and decide in their own mind whether it is wise to continue.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, August 28, 10:41 PM

Perhaps you remember a few years back when the pencil became a viral hit on Twitter. Think back to the year 2011 and recall how tablets were becoming "the next best thing" in education. How was this technology going to be integrated into the school day?

This post provides a number of resources that moves the pencil beyond that viral chat. You will find an image of the pencil with each component representing various groups of people often found in schools.

The video, iPencil, takes a look at what actually goes into making a pencil, and will teach students about how one product impacts much of the world. And last, but not least,, is the Ode to #PencilChat, a short video that looks at technology integration in the classroom.

Why look at the pencil? Here are the last two lines of this post. "Whether metaphor, symbol, or tool, the pencil is flexible, durable and timeless. We wish everyone a great school year."

It's time to give up the notion that "digital natives" are more tech savvy than their teachers. According to a recent study of middle school science students and teachers, the teachers tended to have greater technology use.
Melissa Marshall's insight:

A really interesting article that quotes a study showing that teachers have a greater use of, and understanding, of, technology than their students do. This builds the argument that tech skills must be taught, and that students do not acquire them merely from hanging out on Facebook, watching Youtube videos and taking snapchats! Take that, Marc Prensky!
