Having a baby is a time of transition and frequently it is also a time when we feel overwhelmed, anxious and alone. Research has showed that about 20% of moms experience postpartum depression and anxiety and of course that is only the women reporting how they feel, the percentage is probably much higher! Help is available though. You don’t have to go through this alone. Please share this video with new moms that you know.

I totally agree with the author's comment "It’s not fair that new moms are expected to find their own resources. It is hard enough to seek out and connect with a good therapist or support group when you aren’t postpartum". It is so important to reach moms to let them know resources are available and pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders are very treatable.

Research evidence shows that symptoms of postpartum depression decrease over time—but depression remains a long-term problem for 30 to 50 percent of affected women, according to a report in the January Harvard Review of Psychiatry.

A population-based study shows that the children of women who experience depression during pregnancy are 1.5 times more likely to be depressed themselves as teens.
Dr Sarah Allen's insight:

The research suggests that women who experience depression during pregnancy give their children an increased risk of depression as adults. The lead researcher states, "We really don't want to scare pregnant women or make them feel guilty, nonetheless, the message is to prioritize your own mental state and seek help early in pregnancy if you are feeling low, both for your own sake and for your baby.”
