Walter Adamson's insight:

Q: We hear so much about a “closing of ranks” between CMOs and CIOs, especially from a budget and priorities perspective. What are your thoughts on big data science as it’s applied by marketers? Is this still nascent or under-utilized?

I would say it’s nascent and there are still many things that have to come together, whether it’s agencies or clients, because marketing/analytics have the capability of producing what I call a silo bust. Traditionally, you had functional units and silos in an organization, and once you start to use big data and analytics, those have to come together.

Big Data Analytics And Social Media - The Hype And The Promise

Big Data and What You Can Do With It The amount of data in our world has been exploding. Eric Schmidt at Google has stated: “Every 2 Days We Create As Much Information As We Did Up To 2003“. (Techcrunch).
Walter Adamson's insight:

Unstructured data, which constitutes around 90 percent of Big Data, is made up of emails, social media posts, tweets, videos, mobile phone calls, and website clicks. New, meaning that was never practical to discover before. This could be because of scale, data formats, the distribution of data in many locations, or the fact that no one thought of looking before – or how to make use of it in the first place.

The 3 Biggest Questions of Big Data - Part 3 How Do You Influence

The 3 Biggest Questions of Big Data - Part 3 How Do You Influence | Predictive Analysis | Scoop.it
Walter Adamson's insight:

In this Part 3 of a series we examine the third big question of big data - "how do we influence any actions we desire arising from the second question"? This question is important in the context of marketing. If you want to influence someone to take an action as a result of positively answering the first two questions then you have to be confident that you can influence positively! And the "obvious" reaction or campaign may have negative consequences - this matter of influence needs careful consideration.

The 3 Biggest Questions of Big Data - Part 1 What's Predicted

The 3 Biggest Questions of Big Data - Part 1 What's Predicted | Predictive Analysis | Scoop.it
Walter Adamson's insight:

The temptation with big data is that answers will appear. Of course this is a sentiment encouraged by the vendors - amass the data, use these neat visualisation tools, and insights will emerge - trends, patterns, discriminators -competitive advantage! But as Louis Pasteur said 150 years ago* "Dans les champs de l'observation le hasard ne favorise que les esprits préparés". THAT should be the creed of big data, as a BIG field of observation.

Karl Wabst's curator insight, April 28, 2013 4:56 PM

After the SEC ruling, corporations slowly began using social media as a venue for reporting material data and information.

Social media got its wish, after fighting for recognition as a mainstream medium. Are the players ready? Threats are both internal and external, so change in how social is managed have to address both.

Internally, processes that assure security and accountability for corporate reporting should be audited. Staff may require training on SEC rules in addition to how to write and use the interfaces. Will the stature of, for example, community managers rise as their domains are seen as doing something more than just keeping the firm’s Facebook page updated?

Will the new function cause social media sites to step up their game? Externally, Sites like Twitter, which only provide the most meager security around user authentication, may quickly appear anemic.

What happens after a breach? How does the SEC guidance evolve to meet corporate and investor questions? I have heard some investors grumbling that requiring them to log onto social media sites to look for information is a threat to their privacy because of the user monitoring that goes along with membership.
