Top 8 Spices and Herbs for Type 2 Diabetes

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, September 7, 2015 12:16 AM

Are you using herbs and spices and plant based food to help you control and/or manage some chronic diseases? Western medicine offers very little in terms of helping you control your blood sugar, and even reverse diabetes and its complications.

Health Tips:  The best way for you to take control and win this battle is with consuming better foods, herbs and spices,, losing weight, and keeping active. Consuming complex carbs rich in fiber, so they require less insulin from your body (dark leafy greens, veggies and some fruit, (citrus) seeds, nuts, and legumes). Are you aware that beans are one of the best foods for controlling blood sugar? Because beans are rich in fiber, they keep you full longer which is important for weight control. And beans like other high fiber foods, beans reduce blood sugar spikes that occur after meals.

Did you know that artichokes contain a type of carbohydrate, which has been shown to improve blood sugar in patients with diabetes? Artichokes also contain liver supporting nutrients.

Important too are the type of fats. Choose mono saturated (avocados, olive oil and other seed oils) and also saturated (coconut oil).  If you're not having issues with gluten, choose these seed grains; quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth.

Choose this trace mineral; chromium, which is essential for helping the insulin you have to process sugar more efficiently. It does this by making your cells less insulin resistant. Sweet potatoes, onions, fresh basil, tomato, and Romaine lettuce are top plant based food sources of chromium.

Some anti diabetic herbs and spices are cinnamon (a compound in cinnamon mimics the effects of insulin in the body, while helping make cells more sensitive to insulin's effects). Bitter melon fruit increases availability of glucose to muscles. Keeps sugars from being absorbed through intestine. Fenugreek, an Indian spice which slows absorption of sugars through the intestine, sensitizes muscle to insulin.  Burdock, reduces after meal sugar surges by providing fiber.  Please consult with a trained herbalist before taking any herb.

Green tea, slows sugar release from starchy foods. Also keeps blood from becoming 'sticky'. Rooibos tea strengthens capillaries.
