The Seven Things To Do If your hearing aid gets wet

The Seven Things To Do If your hearing aid gets wet | Hearing Aid Advice | Scoop.it
If your hearing aid gets wet DON'T PANIC! Here are the seven things you need to do to save it!
Geoffrey Cooling's insight:
Seven Things to do if your hearing aid gets wet
1. Remove the aid from the water as quickly as possible – the less water that’s in it in the first place, the better chance it has to work again.
2. Turn it off straight away and remove the battery. Throw the battery in the bin. Don’t be tempted to wait and see if it comes straight back on – turn it off as soon as possible.
3. Close the battery door, remove the tube (if you have one) and dry gently with a towel. Shake it gently to try and get as much water out as possible.
4. Use a hairdryer or a fan to blow-dry it. It’s very important not to let the aid get too hot so don’t use a hair-dryer on a high-heat – use a low-heat and keep the dryer some distance away from the aid. Excessive heat is much worse for electronics than a brief dunk in water. Blow-drying will speed up the dry-out time but you can skip this step if you are worried about the heat or don’t have a fan.
5. Leave the aid to dry out. The amount of time to leave it will depend on how wet it was. I’ve had to leave an aid for two days before it completely dried out. Leave it sitting with the battery door open so that as much air as possible can get it. Better still, place it in a dehumidifier pot – this will speed up the dry-out considerably.
6.  Once you are happy that the aid is dried, put in a fresh battery and try it out. You can also use one of the cleaning tools you received with your aid to make sure the water has not left any residue behind but be very careful poking tools inside your aid.
7. If the aid still does not work then you can either recharge your dehumidifier pot and leave it a while longer or ask your audiologist to send it back for repair.

There has been a lot of fuss about the Eargo, but how good is it?

There has been a lot of fuss about the Eargo, but how good is it? | Hearing Aid Advice | Scoop.it
The Eargo was launched a couple of years ago and they have since upgraded to the Eargo Plus, but what can you expect from them?
Geoffrey Cooling's insight:
I was given an opportunity to test some Eargo Plus devices recently, I told them what I tell everyone, I am pretty honest with my articles so if the stuff isn't great, just don't send it to me. This has in fact put off other people, Eargo seemed un-deterred. For me, that has to be a good start, if they choose to make them available to a big mouth like me, they probably believe in them. They promptly arrived, I have been impressed, let's talk about Eargo.

Jabra Launches an Upgraded Elite Sports Wireless Earbuds

Jabra Launches an Upgraded Elite Sports Wireless Earbuds | Hearing Aid Advice | Scoop.it
Jabra launches upgraded Elites with extended battery life, new personalisation of sound and another colour, here is what you need to know
Geoffrey Cooling's insight:
Jabra, the sister company of Resound, last month, launched an upgraded version of their Elite Sport Wireless EarBuds. They will deliver longer battery life, personalisation of sound and another colour. The battery life increase takes the devices up a step and means that battery life will be similar to competitor products. The Jabra Elites have got some really good press, but battery life was a bug bear for some. The latest upgrade should deal with much of those complaints Their functionality intrigues me, I have wondered for many years what integration of such features would do for people who wear hearing aids. Jabra have already entered in the medical monitoring field. If features like this were integrated into hearing aids, what power over health could be brought to bear? What difference could hearing aids make to ongoing health if they were used as an integrated part of health analysis? Personally I think it is the next step forward for hearing aids, however, there are many technical difficulties to be solved. I believe that any hearing aid manufacturer worth their salt is probably already at work solving them though.

Mid ear infections can be problematic especially in children, would you like an easy to use, mobile solution for accurate diagnosis of ear disease?
Geoffrey Cooling's insight:
I remember when my kids were growing up, it seemed like one or the other had an ear infection at some stage. I swear they were tag teaming us! It isn't a laughing matter though when you have a crying child in pain at 4 in the morning running a temperature. The problem was you never knew when it was going to strike. With the introduction of a new kickstarter device, those days may well and truly be over.

Over The Counter Hearing Aid Act Passed, OTC Coming Your Way Soon?

Over The Counter Hearing Aid Act Passed, OTC Coming Your Way Soon? | Hearing Aid Advice | Scoop.it
So the Over The Counter Act has been passed but are OTC hearing aids coming your way anytime soon? Probably, although it could be up to three years
Geoffrey Cooling's insight:
What Can You Expect From Them?

The US Senate passed H.R. 2430, the FDA Reauthorization Act of 2017 by a vote of 94-1, on August 3, the bill includes the Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act, which provides for the federal regulation of over-the-counter hearing aids for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. The bill will be put forward for the President to sign and then it will become the law of the land. So, once the law of the land has changed, will you be able to go to the store to buy one? The answer is no, the FDA now has to set out regulations for OTC hearing aids and it has up to three years to do so. Although no one expects it to be that long.
