Only 15% reach self-actualization. I wonder how many never get beyond security? More importantly, what constrains those people? As well, we should not mistake people who are busy selling themselves and their limited ideas with anything but the security level.

I've always been a fan of Maslow's hierarchy of needs and I really appreciate this "tweaked" model because it maps it very close to the principles of employee engagement.

On the survival level, I would add "I can't retire" as a common sign of disengagement.  As a supervisor, I do all I can to engage many of these staff as they often provide great context and insight as to what has been done in the past and how efforts can be optimized in order to succeed the next time we try them.

There is no one way to incorporate annotations into your videos. The best way is to test out different annotations, and adjust them as you see necessary. Also, do not add an annotation to a video and forget about it.

I want to discuss other ways to optimize your videos for greater viewer engagement. In this article I will focus specifically on annotations, interactive elements that can be added to your video after it is uploaded. At this time, there are six types of annotations that you can add to your videos.

100 Awesome STEM Resources - Milk and Cookies

100 Awesome STEM Resources - Milk and Cookies | Practical tips for educating | Scoop.it
Why is STEM important? In short, the future job market will revolve around science. This includes all forms of technology, engineering and math. 80% of jobs in the future will require technology skills. Statistics today show that there will be a drastic shortage of job applicants in the next decade with the skills and knowledge to fill these new positions. While only 4% of the nation’s workforce is composed of scientists and engineers, this group creates jobs for the other 96% of the workforce (source). The average professional with a STEM-related degree earns more than double the average national wage. About 3 million jobs are currently unfilled because Americans lack the basic STEM skills needed for the positions (source).

Claudine Revol's curator insight, April 28, 2014 5:00 AM

The communication explosion reaches its peak when you explore the endless avenues running through TED Talks. Moreover, the title educator embodies many forms within these talks.

So it’s precisely for this reason that any educator benefits from so many of these talks. Each speaker reveals his or her passion of a view or a subject with the enthusiasm of a first-year teacher.

Using TED Talks to convey an important message or spark creativity might be more effective in teaching students than an individual agenda or preconceived notion of what should be said. Furthermore, TED Talks challenges educators everywhere to think differently and encourage the same in their students.

These are the best TED Talks for any educator because they make us laugh, warm our hearts, break down barriers, and always inspire us to dig a little deeper and push a little harder, challenging your educator perspective.

Debbie Morrison - "Start Here": Instructional Design Models for Online Courses

Debbie Morrison - "Start Here": Instructional Design Models for Online Courses | Practical tips for educating | Scoop.it

An instructional design model is the place to start—it is a framework, a tool that guides the structure of a course, that leads the learner to a topic, that removes distractions, provides focus, but still allows a learner to take control. Effective instructional design also helps an instructor to teach, to guide and support learners, and to promote meaningful and active learning. When an online course is not well-designed, often the student doesn’t know where to start, is not sure where to find resources, how to interact, or how to learn. Furthermore, if a student is preoccupied about technical aspects of the course due to ambiguous instructions, glitches, or cumbersome applications, the focus becomes not on learning, but on the technology—more barriers.
