Why Should A Startup Have A Social Media Presence?

Why Should A Startup Have A Social Media Presence? | PR and Business | Scoop.it

SHARE First & Worry About Everything Else Second
This Business 2 Community post is written for "business" but certainly applicable to startups. Startups must realize that "process is product".
Process is product means everything you are doing right NOW is a product.

The soon a startup begins publishing, broadcasting and sharing the easier it gets, the richer the fast feedback loops become and the more chances for success they create.

Many startups think what they have is so amazing that it can't be shared. With few exceptions (biotech) it is NEVER the case that your thoughts are unique or so unknown that your share will quake the world.

Any business is created in the execution developed for the idea. To worry about someone stealing your idea is to worry about the tide. Focus your energy on getting as much information out and in as many hands as you can as fast as you can. SHARE.

Realize that the most important "product" you build is the team capable of building something, pivoting on a dime and responding to what they hear with meaningful and amazing results.

If you don't have a way to capture your journey find one (write, video, infographics, animation, stories). Your goal should be to create the means of production - the framework where you can easily harvest UGC (User Generated Content) anytime needed.

UGC is more important to a startup than oxygen. UGC helps gauge reaction, shape your product and determine a startup's future.

Haley Evans's insight:

Social media is one of the main forms of communications in today’s society. Whether it is between publics, consumers, or businesses, social media is an essential way of communicating with one another.  Business are able to use social media in many different ways to help there company and to expand the company to different publics.  By using social media companies are able to not only reach more publics, but have a better chance at becoming a well-known and successful company in the business and consumer world.  One reason why social media is important for a business is advertising.  In Adventure in Public relations, Guth and Marsh explain how much advertising can be done on social media and how affective it is in comparison to other Medias.  Advertisement on social media can be run twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.  It also shows the best of all types of media. The advertisement can show pictures, video, sound, and text. By using social media to advertise, your business has potential to reach consumers worldwide.  When you are reaching consumers worldwide the chances of your company making it big increase significantly.

On top of the advertisement being able to reach so many people, it is extremely cost-effective as well.  Using cost-effecting is another important reason why social media is so important.  It can be extremely expensive to print off thousands of flyers and brochures, or to place ads in a newspaper.  A company can launch a new product on a social media site for free!  To add to this by using social media the company is also able to be time efficient.  When advertising or simply working to reach target consumers and publics, it is made easy with social media.  On social media sites a company can advertise their products and launch dates on the screen, if a user likes a link or an add on their page they are able to follow the company and receive more promotions and ads to that company on their other social media sites.  These platforms help to target the business’ audience and consumers more easily and efficiently. Lastly a huge perk of using social media for your company is that you are able to get timely feedback from consumers.  Guth and Marsh explain that it is important to keep and a close following on the feedback that is given from consumers and when the company receives feedback, make sure to respond quickly and efficiently.

It's very obvious that every company needs a social media presence, not just startups. However, if you can build a following for your company before it gets launched, the more chance for success you will have.

Motorola offers a make-good after Cyber Monday problems

Motorola offers a make-good after Cyber Monday problems | PR and Business | Scoop.it
The CEO apologized for the website crash, and the company has scheduled two makeup sale days—today and Dec. 9.
Haley Evans's insight:

The Motorola company dealt with a crisis this past Monday.  Every year the Monday after Black Friday is Cyber Monday.  The Motorola website was having a huge sale. They were offering  a an unlocked Moto X phone for $150 less than retail. The problem was that the sale was so popular that the website crashed from too much usage during the huge sale on Cyber Monday.  The CEO of Motorola, Dennis Woodside made a statement on the company’s blog and twitter. The CEO statement said, “An extraordinary spike in concurrent orders caused our website to go down. We couldn’t fulfill orders. The site became unstable. While some orders were filled, many customers tried all day to place their orders unsuccessfully. Customers were left frustrated.” This relates to The Adventure in Public Relations book in chapter 13.  The authors discuss that it is important to be prepared and address stakeholders needs.  The company was prepared by having a back up plan ready to go if there was a problem on cyber Monday.

The author’s also discuss that it is important to speak with one voice.  The company did follow the ideas of the book because they chose the CEO to be their main speaker.  It was important that they did this because they were able to address the public in a clear and concise manor.  If the company had many people from the their offices speaking on the matter than words and statements would have been confusing.  The statement was also a good idea because it was sent out in a fast and appropriate time.  They were on target and point with their statement and posted it in a timely manner. The company explained to the consumers what had happened on Monday and why there was a crash in the system.  They also took full responsibility for the crash. Most importantly they sent out a formal apology in this statement which is something the public likes to see.

One thing that I really liked that the company did was what they did on the following Wednesday.  Yesterday, December 4th, the Motorola Company had a cyber Wednesday.  They offered the same deals as they originally did on cyber Monday allowing customers to still order the phone for the cheaper price. I think that this was a great idea. The company took all the right steps in this crisis and seemed very prepared.  They made up for the mess up they had on Monday and made it up to the customers. That gave the company the opportunity to keep their loyal consumer base.

Delta earns scorn for kicking passengers off flight in favor of basketball team

Delta earns scorn for kicking passengers off flight in favor of basketball team | PR and Business | Scoop.it
When the Florida Gators’ plane was grounded with a mechanical problem, passengers on another flight were forced to step aside.
Haley Evans's insight:

In this article Delta Airlines was dealing with a crisis in the past week.  Unfortunately for them the crisis was completely their own fault.  There ignorance and poor judgement wil surely cause issues in the future for their company.  The business made a huge mistake on Monday when the Florida University Gators basketball team lost in their game against Connecticut and was reading to head back home on a Delta flight.  The teams plane was grounded because of mechanical issues. This is where Delta made a huge mistake.  They decided to kick off everyone from a different Delta Airlines plane in order to make room for a charter flight for the Florida Gators team.  This caused a huge issues and outrage for the passengers on the flight originally.  They caused passengers to not only being forced to drive back to Atlanta, but also caused a person to miss an assignment.  To make things even worse Delta made a statement about the incident.  A Delta Airlines representatives told the Gainesville Sun, that the change of the flights was “due to operational need and aircraft routing requirements as a result of the busy travel holidays.” I would have to say that was a very ignorant statement to give because clearly the customers know that is not the case. When the passengers are being boarded off of the plane to only see the entire men’s basketball team boarding the plane right after and then watching the plane take off through the window of the airport. I would say it is safe to say no one believed that statement.  In Adventures in Public Relations the authors talk about crisis communications in chapter 13.  This chapter explains things that a business should do during a crisis.  It is important to have one key spokesperson to handle the communication of the crisis to the media.  Delta did speak with one spokesperson, but did not give and accurate or appropriate statement.  This Delta crisis also goes along with Chapter 11 in The Adventures of Public Relations.  On page 243 the author talks about short term thinking.  Short term thinking is poor critical thinking.  They explain that short term thinking can lead to long term pain and ramifications.  This will lead to more of a problem of ignorance and denial for your company.

2) Tutti possono scrivere. Lascia andare la tua paura. Raccogli i pensieri e inizia a buttar giù nero su bianco. Conosci sicuramente l'argomento.

3) Sii molto chiaro e diretto.

I tuoi clienti diventeranno tuoi fans.

Amazon's Futuristic Plans, Testing Delivery by Drone Service

Amazon's Futuristic Plans, Testing Delivery by Drone Service | PR and Business | Scoop.it
In the not-too-distant future, Amazon deliveries could come by air directly to your doorstep.
Haley Evans's insight:

The business Amazon is a popular internet shopping site that is soon to make a big change.  The plan of Amazon is to make deliveries to your door directly by air mail.  This new delivery service they will be using is called “Prime Air” The “octocopters” are what they are being called and will be ready to take flight in about four to five years. "In 30 minutes or less, you would buy something on Amazon, it would get in that little yellow box, it would go in that little drone and it would come to your doorstep if you live within 10 miles of one of their warehouses or fulfillment centers," reports CNN's Chief Correspondent Christine Romans.

This story has been shared the buzz of the week.  It is clear that the way to keep your business in business is to have new and fresh ideas as well as being fast and assertive.  By creating this new delivery system, their sales are sure to rise by the promise of a fast delivery to consumer’s right at their doors.

This relates back to the book Adventures on Public Relations.  In chapter 8, the authors discuss Consumer Relations.  Public Relations use different ideas and strategies to keep current customers and to also gain new ones.  Companies that use integrated marketing communications have a lot of success in doing so.  Integrated Marketing Communications is when strategies of public relations advertising, marketing, and sales join in a coordinated communications campaign. The authors explain that new technology helps integrated marketing communicators build relationships with their consumers.

This chapter also discusses the importance of product-oriented news releases and media kits. The authors explain that because news coverage can supply a third party endorsement –an independent judgment that a new predict is newsworthy- public relations practitioners strive to place predict stories in relevant media. (170) that is exactly what Amazon did.  They created a new product to make their consumers have an easier and faster response in online shopping.  They also grabbed the attention of the audience by having such a new and unique invention.  They were able to use the media, news, internet, and other types of mediums to market their new invention and to get the word out about what their company is doing.  On the CNN site alone they have text, pictures, and videos of the new creation from Amazon giving their consumers plenty of information on the product.

WATCH: 'Disabled' Mannequins Will Change The Way You See Beauty

WATCH: 'Disabled' Mannequins Will Change The Way You See Beauty | PR and Business | Scoop.it
It's no secret that the smooth, plastic bodies staring out of store windows aren't true physical replicas of the people who stare back at them. But there's no reason they can't be.
Haley Evans's insight:

This article has been one of my favorites that I have written about on scoop it.  A organization called Pro Infirmis created a campaign about equality and beauty.  They created mannequins based off of real people that were either born with disabilities and at some point in life gotten hurt and became disabled.  The project is called “Because Who is Perfect? Get Closer.” This is a great campaign that has reached millions of people explaining how we must except and love one another.

Pro Infirmis has gotten a lot of positive press from this campaign and others they have had in the past.  This video and article alone has gotten 40,433 shares on Facebook, 1,212 tweets, and 424 emails, but this story still continues to be shared and talked about.

The store Nordstrom has also been getting a lot of good publicity and positive feedback from this campaign because they are a store that includes body diversity in their ads as well and their store was mentioned in the interview and article of this campaign.

I related this story back to a couple different chapters in Adventures in Public Relations.  On page 116 the authors discuss the importance of different types of mediums.  The internet is a medium that is used all over the world.  It very successful in sharing and informing consumers of what your company is doing.  This is because the internet can be used and is in use for twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.  Not only is the internet always available and running for people to see but it also has all of the medias combined together in one place.  The internet has pictures, video, sound, and text. That is a perfect example of this article because it has four of those medias, which is another reason this has been such a strong and successful campaign.

This article can also relate back to chapter 8 in Adventures in Public Relations. This chapter is about Consumer Relations.  The idea of trends in consumerism relates mostly to women.  The chapter discusses that women are growing in power especially in the consumer world, making at least 50 percent of the nations private wealth.  This relates to this campaign because women are the most criticized about their image and seeing that you do not have to be perfect o be beautiful is something that will draw women and consumers into the store.

The Top Five Essential Rules for Business Email Responses | PR and Business | Scoop.it
The Top Five Essential Rules for Business Email Responses Since email is the primary way we now communicate for business, it is crucial to respond well, presenting the right image of our business, ...
Haley Evans's insight:

As students in public relations we understand the importance of communications. Communication can make or break a business when it comes to working with new clients, businesses, and organizations.  No one wants to work with a company that cannot contact your client, especially if it is not in timely or professional manner. There are many ways a public relations professional can communicate with other clients and businesses, such as by phone calls, Facebook, Twitter, and most importantly emails.  Email is one of the main ways of communication in the business world. In Adventures in Public Relations, Guth and Marsh explain the importance of email not only in the business to business setting but the employee relation setting as well.  They state the email is the most used employee communications tactic. This communication tactic relates to the number two essential rule of email writing.  That second rule is to “respond to the sender’s question, proposal, or other material first, before adding your own comments and questions.” Like the articles says, there is nothing more frustrating than sending out an email with ideas or questions and getting no response or acknowledgement to anything you wrote.  It is very important that you acknowledge what the other person is saying in their email and not just focus on what you want; otherwise your client will become frustrated and lose interest.

Another important rule that the article discusses is how to begin your response in an email and how to end one. It is always good to be courteous when writing your response.  You want to make your client feel that they are important and that there needs are being met.  In Adventures in Public Relations, Guth and Marsh explain many times about the important of using different tools and tactics for those tools.  Using tactics when writing emails such as thanking the sender for writing or taking fault when a sender is not happy with the service they are getting. It is important that you are polite, professional, and respond quickly to the senders email.  When ending the email make sure to always leave the sender with your contact information, even if the sender already has the information. Finally it is important to always remember to proofread your email before sending it.  There is nothing worse than emailing a prospect client and spelling their name wrong.  We are public relations professionals and it is important that we are professional to our clients.

7 Tips To Get New Facebook Fans For Your B2B Business

7 Tips To Get New Facebook Fans For Your B2B Business | PR and Business | Scoop.it
Does your B2B business have a Facebook page? Need to know how to attract new fans? Learn how with these 7 powerful B2B social media tips from Marketo.
Haley Evans's insight:

This article explains the importance of two major assets in public relations and that is business to business relations and social media, specifically Facebook. Social media is a modern day marketing and communication success in the business and public relations world, so it is important for PR professionals to understand the ideas and concepts of a social media site such as Facebook.  As a Public Relations major, I understand that communications and reputation is extremely important to a brand and a company.  We learn a lot about working with the consumer and the importance of keeping them happy, but the consumers are not the only people we need to be keeping happy. It is important to also focus on other business as well. In our textbook on page 191, Guth and Marsh explains that business- to- business relations is a relationship with your business and another business that have resources your business needs to complete its goals.  This article gives seven tips to help business- to – business relations excel through Facebook. Two of the tips given are to create an active wall and to nurture interaction. It is important to social media as a strategy to interact with consumers and other business or prospects.  A business can post images, media, text, questions, and space for comments to better communicate as well as interact with the business and other followers. To keep this affective you must keep your wall updated and active. Having an active wall will show old and more importantly new conversations, information, and interaction to the interest on the Facebook page. By using these two tips it can keep current followers as well as potentially bring in new followers.

Another important tip given in the article is to create Facebook only exclusives look. This tip discusses the importance of loyalty and exclusive offers to the followers of your Facebook page. They give ideas of contests or discounts to those who become fans of your Facebook page. This not only gives Facebook users more initiative to like and become a fan of your page, but it makes them feel as if you matter to them.  On page 170 in our textbook, Guth and Marsh explain the importance of consumer relations as well as responding to consumer contacts. This can be the most important public relations and business tactic. For a company, they are nothing without their consumers, so it is important to respond and answer their questions, issues, comments, and needs as quickly and efficiently as possible. Customers want to feel loyalty to their company, because of this it is ideal to keep and stay up to date on your Facebook and other social media pages.

Haley Evans's insight:

Syncing into the World of Social Media

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few years, you know that social media is taking over the business world. It is a huge tactic for publicity, advertising, and communication for businesses. The use of social media can make or break a business and their reputation, but when used properly, your company can be very successful. This article, along with the idea given in “Adventures in Public Relations” can give helpful insight to companies how to use social media to better their business.

The first idea is to utilize social media properly. Adventures in public relations discuss the idea of cyber relations on page 320. This is the use of public relations strategies and tactics to deal with publics via the internet and with issues related to the internet. Companies are now making cyber relations a category of its own in the business world because of its importance.  It is extremely important for companies to respond quickly and appropriately to their consumers and followers on social media.  A negative example of this would be our discussion in class about Amy’s Bakery and how they retaliated and were inappropriate on their Facebook page when speaking to consumers.  A positive example of this would be from the critical analysis presentation given on Netflix. The company responded quickly to the consumers’ needs as well as in a fun and appropriate way. Businesses can also keep their name out in the public by utilizing different parts of the social media site as well. Using hash tags, pools, pins, and tags, are just a few ways social media can be a legitimate factor in getting word of your business out to the public.

This article also discusses the importance of paying attention to what your followers are saying. With social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter having newsfeed constantly updating, it is easy to follow what consumers are saying. This in turn is making it easier for the business to check its feed and see what its consumers want or need, as well as concerns or complaints. Because of this it is even more important for businesses to respond as soon as possible to consumer’s complaints and posts. In our textbook, Guth and Marsh explain on page 170, the importance of responses to consumer contacts. They explain that the responses may and can be the most important marketing public relations tactic out there.  Social media can create many opportunities for businesses. When utilizing the services that are brought to the table, it will give your business an advantage in the business world and keep your customers coming

City All School Massacre

City All School Massacre | PR and Business | Scoop.it
Eighteen students were taken to hospitals Monday after they were overcome by the heat during the outdoor All-City Catholic Schools Mass at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School.
Haley Evans's insight:

There are many opinions, arguments, and speculations that are being discussed throughout the Springfield area since this incident occurred on Monday. After reading this article and the comments made on the school’s Facebook page it is clear that there are many parents and students that are angered by the decision not to cancel or reschedule this mass. Much of the blame of this event has been placed on the host of the mass, Sacred Heart Griffin High School. The school made a formal statement that has been seen on their page and news articles as well as a statement a teacher made on the news. After reading from Guth and Marsh we understand that it is important to make a statement regarding a problem soon after the issue happens. It is important to make the statement because the business needs to go into crisis managements.

There are many crisis management steps that the high school could have taken or steps they could have done better. One step would be the step of human nature. The teachers and student were definitely in great emotional stress. Most of the teachers and students went into panic mode. The more and more kids that started passing out and throwing up, the more kids that began to feel sick themselves or became extremely frantic. This could have been avoided by having the faculty and priests addressing the situation rather than ignoring everything that was happening around them.

Another crisis management step that the high school could have done better was the role of communications. Many parents of students were livid with the entire situation. This is said to have happened because parents of students that were taken to the hospital were not notified.  The role of communications can make or break a situation. In this case the lack of communication made the incident a lot worse. It is understandable that the administration would not be able to make a call to parents as soon as it had happened because they were trying to help the students. A tool that the administration could have used was a robo call to all of the parents to let them know what happened at the mass and what actions were being taken.

By working out these crisis management steps the faculty of Sacred Heart Griffin High School could have handled the unfortunate situation better. The students could have felt more safe and calm in their surroundings. The parents would have also been more calm and felt that there children were in better hands if these steps were taken.
