"Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts...Perhaps the fear of a loss of power." -John Steinbeck

"Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts...Perhaps the fear of a loss of power." -John Steinbeck | Power Equals Corruption | Scoop.it

Author John Steinbeck has stated this idea sbout corruption and power. He believes that power doesn't necessarily corrupt but, the thoughts of having it relinquished does. Even though this quote explicitly says power doesn't corrupt and that fear does, power is required for that fear to be present. A person in control will enjoy their authority to the extent where they never want to lose it. Power can be like a drug where once you've had a taste of it, you'll desire more and more and wish to never run out. Corruption is similar to a disease that follows the use of that drug. It can affect some more than others and it may show symptoms like betrayal and selfishness; Long after you've been infected. This is what cause someone to act inhumane and commit to evil decisions. If you are against this statement, look over towards the article about a poor Macbeth who was drawn into a world of tyranny.

The Desire and Pursuit of Power will Corrupt an Individual

This newspaper clearly relates to this thesis because it is about how power corrupts people. The John Steinbeck quote article talks about the effect power will have on an individual. It talks about how power will corrupt someone and cause them not to let it go. The review of Macbeth is an example of someone who had desired power and pursued it. It mentions all of the evil decisions he made to become king and while he was king. It is explaining someone who was corrupted by their desire for power. The advertisement for the 'Power Pack' shows that power will always change someone for the worse. It depicts that power breeds corruption. Finally, The synopsis of the article about officers abusing their power, proves that people who receive power will use it to their own advantage. It also shows that people will do anything like taking illegal drugs to gain power. This is how the newspaper supports my thesis: The desire and pursuit of power will corrupt an individual.

Review: The Corruption of Macbeth

Review: The Corruption of Macbeth | Power Equals Corruption | Scoop.it

Anyone whose been infected by corruption will display noticeable differences in their behavior. They may act like the Devil himself or commit to carrying out things they normally wouldn't do. Corruption will usually be a result of a desire, pursuit, or possession of power. A victim of power and corruption would be Macbeth who was once the king or tyrant of Scotland.

Macbeth was formerly a general in the army of King Duncan's. He was successful in his duty and respected by Duncan. Unfortunately, Macbeth was approached by a trio of witches which predicted he would obtain the throne of king in Scotland. He was soon consumed by the thought of being a powerful and wealthy man. This caused him to pursue power. He did anything he had to achieve it. Since the position of king was going to be passed down to him eventually, he decided to speed up the process by taking out King Duncan. He was appointed king because no suspected him of the crime. Macbeth then murderers to take out his long-time acquaintance, Banquo(and his son), because the witches also saw Banquo's son becoming king. After, he had Nobleman Macduff's family slaughtered. Anyone who stood in his way was killed so he could maintain his power. Macbeth is a clear example of corruption due to power.

Rating: Macbeth's corruption level is a solid 10 out of 10.

The Police are Criminals

The Police are Criminals | Power Equals Corruption | Scoop.it

The article, "Police Corruption: Criminals 'Give Officers Steroids'" is about how some police officers abuse their power to get what they want. It is also about how their desire for power corrupts them.
The article says there have been accounts of police officers negatively using their position in society for their own good. It specifically states that policeman might 'forgive' someone who broke the law for 'sexual favors' or other things of interest. Since some people are desperate not to get a ticket or be arrested, they'll do anything to stay out of harm's way. This article mentions that some policeman will play along to get something they desire. This reading also states officers may receive and use steroids from people at gyms. Police officers have to be healthy and strong for their job so they can chase, fight, and catch criminals. However, some wanted to take a shortcut to gain strength and use steroids, which is illegal. Police officers desire for physical power makes them use steroids. This desire damages their sense of integrity and corrupts them because they disregard the fact that it is illegal to use steroids without a prescription. Since they know they'll get strong very fast, they don't mind that they're committing a crime. Police officers are corrupted so much, that they don't realize they are supposed to stop crimes, not start them.
