The Unaddressed Link Between Poverty and Education

The Unaddressed Link Between Poverty and Education | Poverty assignment (Norman Chan) | Scoop.it
Federal education policy seems blind to the relationship between poverty and student performance.

An interesting op-ed that focuses on the educational performance in the United States and poverty.  The authors feel that class is an obvious factor in educational performance, but that educational policies do not reflect the geographic factors that lead to uneven results.

Norman Chan's insight:

i must admit admit that before reading this article, i do not really think that there would be a link between poverty and education. But after reading this, i found out that there was at least some link between them. One of those links was that those who have a better environment tend to score better in exams. Another link is because the  low-income students experience greater learning loss during the summer when their more privileged peers are enjoying travel and other enriching activities. Is there a way to solve this problem? Or would it forever be a problem in the soceity?

Mindy Tan's curator insight, February 22, 2014 9:44 AM

From this article, I can see that children that are poorer actually get lower results as compared to those that are well fed. I think it is because they dont have a good environment to study in, do not have well-educated parents to guide them along and teach them and most importantly, they are not well-fed and they do not have enough nutritions to help them think or concentrate better. I wonder why they would  put the 'rich' and 'poor' kids together? Putting them together will only result in the richer kids looking down on the poorer kids.

It saddens be that children can't be educated just cause of their lack of money.Poverty an educations plays a huge role in a child's life.WIthout education how are they gona lead in life? Why can't the poor be edcuated for free?

Education and poverty. In simple terms mostly if a child does not have enough money it'll affect their education. It saddens be that children can't be educated just cause of their lack of money.Poverty an educations plays a huge role in a child's life.WIthout education how are they gona lead in life? Why can't the poor be edcuated for free? What puzzles be the most is why isn't it free for those who cant afford it?

More than half of actors are under poverty line - Telegraph

More than half of actors are under poverty line - Telegraph | Poverty assignment (Norman Chan) | Scoop.it
A new campaign is drawing attention to the rise in unpaid work, Alice Vincent reports (More than half of actors live below the poverty line, and theatre is the worst offender for unpaid acting jobs.
Norman Chan's insight:

Many of us would feel that actors are those that are rich. But after reading this article, i found out that i was wrong. there are actually more than half of the actors under the poverty line!  That was really shocking news to me as i never knew that. After this, i feel that i should not determine if someone is rich after hearing there job. things im still puzzled are why do the the actors still work as a actor even though they are being paid well?

Is America losing the war on poverty? - Videos - CBS News

Fifty years ago, then-President Lyndon Johnson declared a "War on Poverty" in America. Two generations later, government programs have helped lift millions out of poverty, but income inequality is growing.

Norman Chan's insight:

I know that the America's poverty's rate is pretty high and that is pretty true as said in the article. I feel its good that the government there is trying his best at trying to help those to come out from poverty but at the same time, the government has caused income inequality in the country. Questions i like to ponder about are whether the government can further lower the poverty rate? and whether the government can do that without causing income inequality?
