Madeeha Shahnaaz's insight:

In BC, there are at least 18% of children suffering from poverty. These children are not attending school and not getting the appropriate education needed. It is said that BC has done the least to help these students. This tells me that people who really can afford schooling are those who are of a certain standard. That means almost a quarter of students are not having their school education. This affects the economy in future if BC is not going to do anything in future. Not much help is given to single parent family either. The help given is not enough to give education for schildren as there are also housing fares that the parents have to pay. Some people voice out that the help that BC give to help the children's education does not exist long enough. After helping few families the help is vanished. I feel that BC might be losing out in future if they continue being like this. I used to think that all country are helping those in need but now realising BC does not give that much help i feel poverty must a topic to discuss about and solve on. I wish poverty does not eaffect the young children who need education and knowledge from school so that in future they will not suffer in poverty.

Jing Yuan Cheong's curator insight, January 21, 2014 7:38 AM

After reading this article 'B.C. Child Poverty Rate Is Canada's Worst: Report', I seriously feel that I am very blessed and fortunate. From what I have read, I knew that almost every five children, one is poor. The child poverty rate is 18.6 per cent as compared to the national rate of 13.3 per cent. In Singapore, nobody is left out, nobody is considered poor. This is because all Singaporeans have help from the government. We have subsidy, help from the social worker and etc. Canadian also received help from their government. The government has taken action, focusing on economic growth, and making child care more affordable for everyone. The families are struggling with their lives, they have no jobs and cannot earn a living. Furthermore, there are also many single parents who have difficulty bringing up their children. Thus, the government also start to create more job opportunities for all. Government has been giving away tax revenue by lowering tax rates. In the last ten years, the governments in Canada has invested 3.6 billion dollars to provide affordable housing and more than 98000 families have benefited. In my opinion, I think the government should had done better. Probably the government can send their citizens oversea to study and work. In this way, the Canadians can bring up the economy growth. However, the government might face difficulties as the Canadians might not be qualified to study and work oversea. I was wondering why all the governments in the world cannot be like our Singapore's government where everyone is not left out and no one is living in poverty.

Madeeha Shahnaaz's insight:

this is my insight using 4cs. Firstly i feel that this is a very good deed. They are even having campaign for every part to help decrease poverty. They have campaign that are in charge for education so that children will not suffer on early age because of poverty. They are having holding charity events for them. They even make sure that children from kindergarden onwards have good diet and balanced time of studies and play. This is to show that children suffering from poverty are no different from others. They are treated fairly as well. They also have camapigns on health issues. This helps poor people who are suffering from illness. This changed my attitude from how people look at poverty. I used to think people dont care about poverty and only government has the rights to do something to decrease poverty. But now it seems that even normal people like us can change this situation by playing a part in these campaign because fighting poverty cannot be done alone.

Madeeha Shahnaaz's insight:

i feel that poverty has affected people around the world especially in cold times. But i feel children are the most affected. Children living in poverty cannot afford to buy winter coats and warm blankets during cold season. This is a harsh reality for them as they have to attend schooling and must have a good sleep and a good health to continue school. It is already hard for them to buy food and pay the school fees. The cold atmosphere do not favour them. Their parents have a hard time as well. They have to avoid the state of poverty. They cant even afford to buy heater. Their harsh lives make me pity them. I feel there should be more to be done for these people. This is made me change my attitude towards poor people as i thoght people living in poverty actually have a good life not going school but i was not aware that their parents have to actually work ten times harder than normal parents for their children to enrol in school and at that time the cold season is not favouring them. Poverty should stop here so that children can enjoy their childhood.
