How should you measure poverty? It is a question that has generated enormous controversy in India.
Fan Hong's insight:
I knew that there is a gauge of extreme poverty in India. It also should focus instead on a more comprehensive measure of what it would take to satisfy a person’s basic needs for food, energy, housing, drinking water, sanitation, healthcare, schooling and social security. I learnt that India continues to rank extremely low in United Nations’ measures of well-being. India ranked 136 out of 186 countries in the 2012 U.N. Human Development Index and 94 out 119 in the U.N. World Food Programme’s Global Hunger Index.680 million people, or 56% of Indians, now live below the empowerment line. Insufficient and ineffective public programs, poor agricultural productivity and a lack of better jobs all conspire to keep people poor. Why India can't get out of poverty, is it because of the vast population? Is India's financial In poor shape??
The Guardian The American right focuses on poverty, not inequality, to avoid blame The Guardian What's the reaction of conservatives? They want to change the subject.
Fan Hong's insight:
I have knew that on every measure from education levels to marriage rates, poor families are drifting further away from the middle class.Widening inequality is making it harder for the poor to escape poverty and thwarting equal opportunity.Slow growth and few jobs hit the poor especially hard because they're the first to be fired, last to be hired, and most likely to bear the brunt of declining wages and benefits.I learnt that the middle class of USA is stretched to the limit. Not only is there less money for good schools, job training and social services, but the poor face a more difficult challenge moving upward because the income ladder is far longer and its middle rungs have disappeared. Is there no other way beside increasing the taxes, to help the poor? Is there proper policy help the poor like singapore? Do USA in so much debt that it can't even help its own citizen?
The Children's Society today called for the government to take more action on the causes of food poverty in the UK.
Fan Hong's insight:
I know that Families in UK on low incomes and in poverty are being forced to turn to food banks because they cannot find the money to feed their children and themselves.More action needed to prevent poverty, rather than merely alleviating it.I learnt that The Government must take action to address the underlying causes of the rising costs of living, poverty and debt, cuts to support for families and a lack of help available in a crisis. Some government programmes in UK that had helped people in the past, but they needed to be sustained. The fact that free school meals are to be offered for all infants from September, but noted that half a million children in poverty will still be missing out on them at primary and secondary school levels. Why the government of UK never do some proper action to stop poverty, when their finanical is no as bad as USA?
