Lack of Safe Drinking Water Kills Over 3,000 Liberians Annually

Lack of Safe Drinking Water Kills Over 3,000 Liberians Annually | Poverty Assignment_Chia Yi Xuan | Scoop.it
The Liberian Civil Societies (CSOs) WASH Network recently revealed that about 3,000 Liberians, mostly women and children, die every year due to lack of safe drinking water, improved sanitation and Hygiene in the country.
Chia Yi Xuan's insight:

After reading this article, I feel shocked as there is so many people who die every year due to the lack of safe drinking water. It is said in the article that about 3000 Liberians die after drinking polluted or unsafe water. This could be due to the pollutants that people throw into the river or factory waste. I am quite sad and realised the importance of having safe and clean water to drink from. I think that there are no water purification system in Liberia due to the state that they are in. Hence, i hope that more people will help them out by transfering clean supply of water to them, it can reduce the number of death rates.I believe that the small actions we make can make an impact to their lives.

Chia Yi Xuan's insight:

From this article, it says that majority of the people living in poverty comes from Asia. The reasons that they are living in poverty is excessive population growth on scarce resources and there is a strong caste discrimination, hence most people in these countries are living in poverty. In the photo, it looks like there are many people on the beach either pikcing up scraps or whatever they can find. The conditions of their beaches are also very dirty and this shows the state that they are in. I hope that more people will help them out, either by helping to clean up their environment or donating food to them. I believe that all these things that we do will make an impact on their lives. I wonder why is there so many scraps and waste on the beach when there are scarce resources in these countries.

Wealth are not distributed widely well around the world. Poverty in Asia are also caused by rising population growth and population growth can't be controlled..Food supply, safe water and good education are not sufficient in these poor countries.

5 Causes Of Poverty In Africa

Via Micaela Desmet
Chia Yi Xuan's insight:

From this article, It shows what are the causes of poverty in africa. The main reason is due to poor government. There are a few main points leading to the poverty in Africa, mainly, Corruption, Environmental Problems and Diseases. Although Africa has agriculture to provide them with food,it is no longer sustainable due to the poor environment hygiene and climate there. The problem of poverty there also increases as there are diseases such as HIV and Aids. I hope that more people will help Africa be it in terms of food supply or environmental issues and more volunteers will help them out.

Tan Yong Ann's curator insight, January 30, 2013 9:37 PM

My insight from this is that Africa is poor because of 1) Poor Governance 2) Conflict 3) Corruption 4)Environmental Degradation 5)Disease

The government did not address priority areas of poverty causing this issue to carry on. In addition there are many who are participating in armed conflict, and of couse with these factors it will lead to corruption where funds for people will be uncounted for. Now to add on it Africa needs agriculture but due to many poor agriculture practices which damages the land and finally since almost all children in Africa are underweight its natural that they are all more prone to sickness and diseases. The governmentcould do so much more like forming democratic relations with more countries so as the other countries may provide aid and we could also help by actions like donating funds to organizations which help all these people in Africa

Devyabharati's curator insight, January 31, 2013 4:54 AM

This is my insight. Africa is suffering from many problems such as Poor Governance, Conflict, Corruption, Environmental Degradation and Disease. These problems are not addressed and they are affecting the people of Africa. The people of Africa aren't guided well either. Government should step up and solve all this problems by forming diplomatic ties with other countries and asking organisations to help them to stop and prevent poverty and improve the lives of Africans.

Brandon Lee's curator insight, February 4, 2013 10:52 AM

From the insight of the article, it spelt out the five causes of Poverty in Africa. They are namely Poor Governance, Conflict, Corrupt, Environment Degradation and Disease issues. The article also relates that the African government need a healthy budget in its expenditures to defence against its social and economic development and stability.

In my opinion, a strong and good governance will have great impact on its country development.

In thoughts, Africa could resolve its poverty issues overtime, provided that it resolves most of its conflicting issues within its country.

BURUNDI: Fears of looming food shortage

BURUNDI: Fears of looming food shortage | Poverty Assignment_Chia Yi Xuan | Scoop.it
There are fears of a looming food shortage in Burundi after heavy rains damaged two successive harvests, say officials.

Via diana buja
Chia Yi Xuan's insight:

From this article, i can infer that agriculture plays an important role in maintaining the food supplies for everyone. It also says that whenever the people in Burundi are ready to harvest their crops, the climate or heavy storm will destroy it, the supplies of food that is stored in the people's house are also running out. There is also a rising prices in food as so most people cannot afford it and have to plant their own agriculture but it is destroyed twice by strong and heavy storm. It is also stated in the article that food stocks are depleting and there is a need for new supplies. I feel very sorry for the people living there as when they are ready to harvest their food, it will always get destroyed. I hope more people will help them by donating food supplies to them and helping them out.

Chia Yi Xuan's insight:

From this, i can infer some of the causes of child poverty and the impact that it has on all of us. It is a serious issue and it is constantly rising. Some of the reasons are due to the lack of income of the family, when this happens, children in poverty is likely to have access to nutrition and early-childhood education. This is an important point as this will stunt development at a time when their brains should be forming the foundation. I feel very sad after reading this scoop as there are many children living in poverty and education is very important to everyone of us. I hope more people will help to donate food supplies or even help them out. I think that even a small little help from any one of us will make a difference in their life.
