Ryan Lum's insight:

I feel that this article has thought me that poverty is happening everywhere in the world, even in schools. Most pupils in school always feel that they must have the latest gadgets to keep up with their peers, but little do they know that some students don not worry about these things, in fact they are worrying about basic neccesities such as-do i have enough clothes to wear or do i have enough food to eat. we should all know that we are very fortunate to have basic neccesities and we should treasure that fact.

when the parents have to worry on their child's well being and their schoolwork, they would work harder instead to provide for their child by working longer hours. Poverty has a direct impact on education as people living in poverty would prioritize their health. I think that the schools should do something to help them like sponsoring coats and meals for them so that they do not go home cold and hungry and worry about their own needs.

I agree with the writer that poverty surely has great effect on one's life as the child has to worry about basic needs in life as well as study. Poverty is happening all around the world. Lots of children are still in poverty after they grow up due to the lacking of education. If we do not ensure that our children have enough food to eat and enough clothes to wear to keep warm in winter, the children will not focus on their study as hunger or freezing will distract them. As they are trying to meet the basic needs, they'll just put their education at the second place. Quote from the article" If we don't make sure that our kids have proper nutrition, clothing and shelter, they have very little chance of living up to their potential in the classroom." Therefore we have to be really thankful for having all these things and not being in poverty.

Nice thinking there! I agree with you that Singapore's way of helping the poor is through schools and having the FAS. I feel sad too that the children are not prioritizing school due to their circumstamces. I believe that despite of that these children's parents should encourage them to school instead of just staying at home as through this they can at least gain knowledge. It is really worth it! I believe that children should not be deprived of education to find a better job in the future and step out of poverty

What Does Living In Poverty Really Mean?

What Does Living In Poverty Really Mean? | poverty assignment by_ryan lum | Scoop.it
Author Tim Harford says defining poverty isn't straightforward — it's also about how people view it.

Ryan Lum's insight:

I feel that this article really tells us the real meaning of poverty. to many people, poverty means not enough money to buy luxurious things such as a smartphone, a computer or a big house.little do they know that the true meaning of poverty is not having a roof above their heads, not having enough money to feed themselves and even not having simple neccesities.I fell that people should stop saying that they are in poverty just because they do not have the latest gadgets, and learn the true meaning of poverty.
