This is my insight using See-Think-Wonder. In the article and statistics, i see that most of the people who are poor comes from Asia. I also see that the cost of living, such as land cost and housing cost are expensive. I also see that most people suffering from poverty in Asia have inadequate access to medical necessities. From the picture, i can see that a flood recently happened and the children are trying to recover from it.
From the article, i think that most of the poor people comes from Asia because of many factors. Such include education, pricing problems, and mainly because of population. With the population becoming too great, competition for jobs are increased, leading to more who have no work and thus no money to pay for their child's education. Land and housing is expensive as Asia suffers from land constraint. especially in well developed countries. With too much population it is hard to help everyone in medical problems. The cost of having too many children is also another main factor that causes poverty.
In countries like india where poverty is very well known, why does government still not do enough to help the poor? When countries get hit by disasters, why other country does not help each other?
Annual food survey shows that households are ditching fresh, healthy foods and 'trading down' to counter rising prices
The UK's poorest households are being disproportionately hit by the impact of soaring food prices, according to new government figures that also show the consumption of every major nutrient has fallen in the last four years.
In order to cut costs since 2007, UK households have bought less bread, lamb, beef, fish, fruit, vegetables, potatoes and alcoholic drinks – but more bacon.
The government's annual Family Food survey, which provides the most detailed annual snapshot of food and drink spending and consumption, found that weekly spending per person on all household food in 2011 was £27.99, an increase of 1.5% on the previous year. But because of price rises, that bought less food - 4.2% less in 2011 than in 2007.
This is my insight using See-Think-Wonder. From this article, i see that during the year 2007 onwards, the price of food has increased alot. The rich are however, consuming more food. To cut cost, super markets have bought less food to sell. Many have also started eating unhealthily to cut cost and some has even consume less than they should.
This makes me think that the poor would be affected most as the rising prices would cause the poor to not be able to afford food. Thise may lead to malnutrition to one's family. The affected live may also be disrupted especially for the poor as their expenditure would have to go more on food. This is also the time for fast food restaurants to promote their food as their food are not as expensive but unhealthy, thus in this time there will be many people who will be unhealthy or suffering from malnutrition.
This article makes me wonder why the government is not doing enough to help the poor regain their proper health consumption, as the rising prices of food is not caused by them, it is not their probelm. This article also makes me wonder why are there shortages of food, such that prices would be affected to a great extend.
This is my insight using 4c. From this article, i already know that most people that has mental illness are more likely to live in porverty as one who cannot work properly because of sickness would most probably not be able to find a job, leading to porverty.
However the idea in this passage is that many people who live in porverty would most likely develop many problems such as health risk, risk of developing mental illness and stress. On the other hand, many people who was born with mental illness already are also more likely to live in porverty. It seems to me that both are related.
According to the passage, it is mentioned that when the government tries to help by giving money to the poor, it only further stresses the victim. However, by giving victims mental health intervention programs, victims seems to have their financial situation improved as their mental health improve. Thus i think it is easier to help the victims in their mental health instead of financial as people with proper health can work normally and eradicate themselve of porverty.
However, the situation of mental illness gained through porverty would not have happened if the person would have not gotten porverty in the first place. By not doing the right thing to earn themselve proper health condition, it would not lead to mental health problems, then being unable to help themselves.
Eradicating poverty can involve many varied and innovative approaches according to circumstance. But a universal factor is that development of livelihoods depends on communities enjoying good health and access to education.
This is my insight using 4c. From this article, i already know that many people in the world, going to more that millions have no access to clean water. I also know that clean water is expensive.
The big idea in this article is that out of all forms of poverty, the need for water is the most important. Because water shortages is existent in other countries, having enough food or a good income would still not be enough for survival. In this article, it is said that with access to water, the eradication of poverty from one's live is easier. With such improvement, one does not need to worry about survival and can take this oppotunity to help themselve.
Hence, this article encourages us to help those in need of water first. By prioritizing the improvement of water, proper hygiene are made possible in less developed countries, giving them more hope to help themselves.
However, solving the problem of water shortage may not be as easy as other forms of poverty. In some climates of some countries, water is not obtained very easily. Creating machines that can convert used water into clean water can be very expensive. Some country own a portion of the world's supply of water, buying from them is also expensive. Thus, solving the problem of water shortage may be important, but it is not easy.
"Are more and more people in the western world dropping off the radar and becoming the invisible poor or is the opposite happening? We recently heard that an astounding 46 million Americans are officially below the poverty line (That's $23,050/year for a family of four according to the official sources). That number really caught our eye and as such we decided to do a little more digging to help put some more facts and figures around it. Above is a nice visualization of the results we came up with."
This is my insight using See-Think-Wonder. From this statistic, i can see alot of statistic about the number of people who are poor and the people's opinion related to poverty and welfare. In the article, i can see that 46million american are considered to be poor, and form the authors opinion, to prevent porverty, we should manage our wealth and make sure that we earn more than we spend.
I think that from the statistics, most people are poor mostly due to the fact that they were uneducated in alot of ways. From the statistics, 1.2 million students drop out from high school every year. Thus, these people were mostly uneducated and cannot find a proper job, leading to drugs and borrowing of money. i also think that most people are poor because they are lazy and do not want to help themselves, as agreed by half of the americans that the poor are not doing enough to help themselves, and by 43% of americans that people who are poor can find a job if they are willing to work.
This article and statistics makes me wonder why american governments are not doing enough to educate students the importance of jobs and studies. Because people who are poor can actually work, but are too lazy to do it, this also makes me wonder why the government are giving money to the poor when they are able to help themselves
