Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Canada's Approach to Racism

Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Canada's Approach to Racism | Conflict based on racism | Scoop.it
Why is it that the U.K.'s newspaper is willing to publish a painfully honest editorial about race in Canada but Canadian papers aren't? Before Mr. Douglas was published in the U.K., he submitted his personal op ed to Canadian newspapers.

Loo Shu Yuan's insight:

Honestly, who wants to get discriminated against by others. You cannot blame people for their race because they are born that way, and they cannot choose their looks or skin colour. Black Canadians are forced to leave Canada and go to UK or US, just because the White Canadians are the majority. This is very infuriating. People should be more considerate and think before they act.

The Canada media tends to go around the issue of racism and not talk about it. They talk about almost everything else, but just simply not racism. I can imagine it is quite annoying to be a Black Canadian.

Chan Kin Leong's curator insight, July 13, 2014 7:01 AM

After reading this article, I felt that Canada is treating people very unfairly by supplanting black Canadians for the Canadians who are white in their skin colour. In my opinion, I think that Canada president should forbid this act as prejudice towards the black Canadians are appearing in the country. People should be treated fairly and not vice versa just because of the majority. Also, this act might affect the black Canadians as they are being rejected by the Canada society which would arise to social issues such as poverty due to the lack of having a job for the black Canadians. Also, this may even lead to racial conflicts such as riots due to being treated unfairly of a particular group of people.

Kelvin Tsui's curator insight, July 13, 2014 7:47 AM

in this article

what i have known about Canada is that in Canada, they do not talk about their unfair prejudice against the black community and that they also do not address this issue as they do nit mention it. i think that the is not as bad as physically or verbally abuse, but it is still not the right thing to do., I think that we should no matter what treat everyone equally no matter the colour gender or race.

15 Charts That Show The U.S. Isn't Over Racism

15 Charts That Show The U.S. Isn't Over Racism | Conflict based on racism | Scoop.it
On July 2, 1964, the Civil Rights Act was signed into law, officially banning discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It also ended racial segregation in schools, at the workplace and in general public facilities.
Loo Shu Yuan's insight:

It is really unfair of people to judge others based on their race. In the U. S., the Blacks are at a disadvantage of almost everything; arrested due to possession of drugs when the Whites do not, and many more. People get upset with these acts of discrimination, and thus riots and protests will surface, causing a lack of peace and security in the country. The government could actually make it more fair by ending the vicious cycle of segregation and unfair policies. Singapore should keep in mind that there are people of different races living in the same community.people should take note of whatever they do or say no matter privately or in public, this will thus ensure that there will not be unhappiness among people in the country.

Prejudice is an instinct and it is natural. Those in power benefit from prejudice such as white Americans, they might not want to change the society, and there is a lack of will. The world will never be fair to everybody.

Everlyn Chia Yee Hui's curator insight, July 14, 2014 8:26 AM

After reading this article, I realised that even after we have claimed to be over Prejudice of any type, there is still some Prejudice going on around the world. This article shows us some examples of Racial Prejudice or Racism. It shows us how the Blacks and Hispanics are being treated unequally from the Whites. Even though 50 years ago, the Civil Rights Act was signed into law, officially banning discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, there is still some minor discrimination against this law. Some examples of the Whites being treated better includes the facts that Blacks and Hispanics attend poorer funded schools than the Whites. Also, Affluent Blacks live in poorer neighbourhoods compared to Working-Class Whites, the loss of different Racial Communities to the Great Recession was widely different and how employers are most likely to turn away job seekers if they are African American. I feel that it is outrageous to judge a person based on colour, race or religion. If the world is going to be so hypocritical, then what is the point of ever signing the Civil Rights Act into law? I think that once such a law has been implied, people (citizens) should take note of it and abide by it. This law has been implied to prevent any conflicts from occuring. However, if people are still being so hypocritical and judgemental, then conflicts would definitely be sparked. I feel that people should be aware of other people's feelings about major problems like this. It is important for us to take laws like this seriously. I feel that, as Singaporeans, we should be most aware of this as we are living in a multi-racial country with a constantly increasing number of foreigners. By taking situations like this seriously, we, as a nation, are preventing the spark of a possible conflict together.

Tse Min's curator insight, July 14, 2014 10:48 AM

If you clicked on the webpage to view the charts, there are actually so many examples shown visually that U.S. is NOT over racism. I strongly everyone deserves a seconds chance, whether you have crimminal record or not. But if we take a look at graph 13, the chances of a white-skinned men getting a job after being released from the jail is so much higher even after the the black-skinned men have voiced their minds.

Racist train tirade woman could be charged with offensive behaviour - The Guardian

Racist train tirade woman could be charged with offensive behaviour

Witnesses to the woman's racist rant on a train near Strathfield have been asked to come forward. Photograph: YouTube.
Loo Shu Yuan's insight:

Actually, it is great that racist behaviour is definitely not accepted, neither tolerated in Sydney. This is very rare to be seen throughout all the countries in the world. A lady might face prosecution for hurling racist comments in a Sydney train. I feel that it should not be a 'might', instead it should be a 'will' , as this can serve as a warning to others who are racist. The government can implement more severe punishments for people who violates the rules regarding racism. This, I believe, will improve the situation in a lot of countries.

This woman's behaviour is impossibly horrendous. I could not believe she just hurled words of Racism onto people like that. Her words not only involved hurting the other party but also insulting the party's country. I feel that such behaviour should not be tolerated in any country and I think that it is upright justice that she is paying for it.

Tse Min's curator insight, July 14, 2014 11:03 AM

Honestly, I was shocked when I saw this video. No one deserves to be told off like that!! If I was there, I could not care less and stood up for my morals; for what I think is right. What she said was simply awful. I am grateful to the person who took this video, because I am pretty sure that without this video, no action would be taken, and this act of racism would not have been known to the world. I think that this lady should pay others more respect and have more patience and try not to disgrace herself next time in public.

Ying Ting's curator insight, July 15, 2014 8:25 AM

I am really disgusted at this lady's behavior, who gave her the right to insult chinese people like that. She even quarreled and mock her boyfriend saying that he can't even have a regular girlfriend.
