Transferable skills: Keys for standing out from the crowd

Transferable skills: Keys for standing out from the crowd | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

“I am a leader and a visionary.  I have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  I am a researcher.  I am extremely analytical.  I am an excellent planner and implementer.”

Everyone who attended Sarah Cardozo Duncan’s seminar on Transferable Skills at the NatureJobs Career Expo Boston on May 20th was told to turn to the person sitting next to them and repeat those sentences. There were uncertain glances and giggles at first, but the room quickly grew noisy as attendees gained in confidence and declared these traits to one another – ones that they, and all other scientists, will organically absorb as part as their research training. Academics Anonymous: so many PhD students, so few jobs

Academics Anonymous: so many PhD students, so few jobs | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

Unis need to stop merely training academics and instead start providing some of the jobs they have trained them for.

Arts and humanities departments across UK universities spend significant time and effort recruiting PhD students to study with them.

Yet concern for such students and their futures seems to start and end with getting them through the door and to the end of their programmes of study.

With too many fledgling academics and not enough entry-level jobs into the academy, why aren't institutions and permanent members of staff doing more to bridge the gulf between PhD and post-doc? (...) - The Guardian, 23 May 2014

How to ask the right questions when transitioning from academia to industry

A career in the life sciences can be incredibly rewarding, more so if you are in the right environment with a solid leader. We have all seen or heard of the student who changed labs in their fifth year because of poor interactions with their mentor, the eight year postdoc too afraid to move on, the senior research associate unable to progress to the Scientist level because of degree requirements, or the scientist pigeonholed into doing the same type of work day in and day out. Some of these problems can be eliminated by doing due diligence prior to joining an academic lab or industry position and asking some key questions. Know the Vital Players in Your Career: Tenure-Track Peers

Know the Vital Players in Your Career: Tenure-Track Peers | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

What you should look for in an academic friend.

An assistant professor in the social sciences once described a group of tenure-track colleagues in his department as "the lamenting society." Once a week they met for lunch to complain about, well, everything and everyone. At first, attendance at this conclave of the irate exhilarated him: He felt better knowing other people were as unhappy there as he was. But over time he noticed that: (a) nobody in the group offered any solutions to the evils they cited, (b) some of the "cataclysms" seemed petty or imaginary, and (c) he felt increasingly drained by all the negativity.(...) - by David D.
