Glut of postdoc researchers stirs a quiet crisis in science

Glut of postdoc researchers stirs a quiet crisis in science | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

The life of the humble biomedical postdoctoral researcher was never easy: toiling in obscurity in a low-paying scientific apprenticeship that can stretch more than a decade. The long hours were worth it for the expected reward -- the chance to launch an independent laboratory and do science that could expand human understanding of biology and disease. But in recent years, the postdoc position has become less a stepping stone and more of a holding tank. (...) - The Boston Globe, by Carolyn Y. Johnson, October 05, 2014

How Nations Fare in PhDs by Sex [Interactive] | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

How women and men fare in doctoral studies around the world.

In the U.S., women are going to college and majoring in science and engineering fields in increasing numbers, yet here and around the world they remain underrepresented in the workforce. Comparative figures are hard to come by, but a disparity shows up in the number of Ph.D.s awarded to women and men. The chart here, assembled from data collected by the National Science Foundation, traces the gender gap at the doctoral level for 56 nations. The situation in individual countries varies widely, but as the numbers make clear, there are interesting exceptions to the global trend. (...) - Scientific american, September 16, 2014

Compte-rendu de l’atelier animé par Stéphanie Tillet, consultante d’Objectif pour l’emploi, l’une des huit associations lyonnaises d’accompagnement des cadres. Sometimes, the brightest stars in science decide to leave. Nature finds out where they go.

When Soroosh Shambayati left his organic-chemistry lab, he didn't leave chemical synthesis behind. As a chemist PhD turned investment banker, he started working in the derivatives market in the 1990s. The transactions involved arranging a complex series of trades in a precise order, and it reminded him of synthesizing an organic compound, reaction by reaction. Higher education and the culture of gratitude

Higher education and the culture of gratitude | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

Universities are capitalising on junior academics’ willingness to accept deteriorating working conditions, argues Luke Brunning.

If you frequent the parts of the internet where philosophers gather, you may be familiar with a controversy that happened earlier this year involving a woman known only as W, whose job offer at a US liberal arts college was retracted after she attempted to negotiate a better deal.

W’s style was direct. She had put forward several requests aimed at making it “easier” for her to accept the proffered tenure-track position at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. These included a pay rise, a term of maternity leave, a cap on course preparation, a sabbatical before her tenure review and a delayed starting date. The college promptly withdrew the offer on the grounds that “[W’s] provisions indicate an interest in teaching at a research university and not at a college, like ours, that is both teaching and student centred”. Essay on what new doctoral students should know about the job market

First-year graduate students have now settled into their new environs ready to embark on the life of the mind. They have met with advisers and department chairs, and likely gone through some formal orientation. The sessions normally address how their research money can be used (provided there is any), how to write a teaching assistant syllabus, how to write a grant application, and a number of other topics with varying levels of utility. All too often, however, these orientations leave out some of the big picture issues that incoming students in the humanities and social sciences should be considering. Below I have outlined a few things I wish I had been told at the beginning of this journey. (...) - by Alexander L. Wisnoski III, @insidehighered, September 26, 2014

NSF data find very low unemployment rates for science, engineering and health Ph.D.s

NSF data find very low unemployment rates for science, engineering and health Ph.D.s | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

The 2013 unemployment rate for those with research doctoral degrees in science, engineering and health fields was 2.1 percent, one-third of the rate for the general population aged 25 or older, according to an analysis released by the National Science Foundation on Friday.

Ph.D.s in these fields -- who have many career options in and out of higher education -- historically have high employment levels. In 2001, the unemployment rate was only 1.3 percent. But the 2013 rate of 2.1 percent represents a meaningful drop from the 2.4 percent figure that the NSF found in 2010, at the height of the economic downturn that started in 2008. A PhD is more than just research training

A PhD is more than just research training | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

Just last month, I was faced with that terrifying prospect of “what’s next?” as I handed in my PhD thesis and await the dreaded viva date. It’s a fear of the unknown, one that I felt at the end of my undergraduate course and my after my masters too. When I completed each of those, I had a passion for my research topic and I knew instinctively what the next step was. Now at the end of my PhD, although I love what I did, I have to consider whether my future lies within academic research and teaching or applying skills outside academia. Ph.D.'s, come out of the closet!

A close friend of mine—I promised not to use his name, so let's call him Fisher—has a secret. It is a secret I also held when I was a graduate student. It's likely that it is also kept by many of the science Ph.D. candidates you know. If you promise not to tell Fisher's Ph.D. adviser (or mine), I'll let you in on this well-hidden truth: Fisher isn't planning to pursue an academic career. Actually, it's an open secret. Fisher's Ph.D. adviser already knows. Fisher knows his Ph.D. adviser knows. But—and here's the thing—there is absolutely no way they're ever going to talk about his career plans.(...) - by Lina Nilsson,Science, 8 August 2014: Vol. 345 no. 6197 p. 706
