Future of Work: Musical Performance in Virtual Reality

Future of Work: Musical Performance in Virtual Reality | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it

Today’s guest post continues our theme on the Future of Work in a somewhat different direction: the performing arts and music.

The rise of digital music and music sharing has challenged the existing economics of the music business. And at the same time these very technologies offer artists new ways to connect with fans, customers, and other artists. A shared virtual reality environment presents an entirely new creative means for performing music and sharing music and other art as well as potentially providing a platform for selling or exchanging it.

As the Singularity approaches, the very nature of work and many of the tools we use on a daily basis will change radically. Chances are that most of you reading this article are sitting at something called a desk right now. But what are desks and why do we have them? What is the future of the desk? What about mobile and augmented reality technologies? Can’t they make the very idea of a desk obsolete? Let’s take a look.

Friday Brain Food: Claude Shannon — Father of the Information Age | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it

Here’s a short video on mathematician Claude Shannon the father of information theory for your weekend.

Shannon was also an early developer of artificial intelligence and robotics, and was a transhumanist thinker who somewhat controversially stated, “I visualise a time when we will be to robots what dogs are to humans. And I’m rooting for the machines.” (Claude Shannon interviewed in Omni Magazine 1987)

As we approach the Singularity, more and more of our mundane tasks will be offloaded to robots, AIs, and various types of hybrid man/machine crowdsourcing systems. Or so some of us hope. But if it happens, what will be left for humans to do?

Ray Kurzweil Explains The Law Of Accelerating Returns

Ray Kurzweil Explains The Law Of Accelerating Returns | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it

Speaking at this year's World Of Business Ideas (WOBI) conference, Ray Kurzweil, author of The Singularity Is Near, explained how he uncovered the Law of Accelerating Returns.

According to Kurzweil, a series of observations can be laid into what he coined, the law of accelerating returns as follows:
-Evolution applies positive feedback in that the more capable methods resulting from one stage of evolutionary progress are used to create the next stage. As a result, the

-rate of progress of an evolutionary process increases exponentially over time. Over time, the “order” of the information embedded in the evolutionary process (i.e., the measure of how well the information fits a purpose, which in evolution is survival) increases.

I have great respect for the current crop of futurist pundits — Ray Kurzweil, Vernor Vinge, Max More and all the rest.

However, many people I talk to seem to assume that these folks were the first to tell the kind of story they’re telling in a serious way — the first to talk about rapidly accelerating technology leading to dramatic, amazing changes in the relatively near future.

Politics and Transhumanism — Interview with Italian Transhumanist MP Giuseppe Vatinno

Politics and Transhumanism — Interview with Italian Transhumanist MP Giuseppe Vatinno | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it

Is transhumanism a political movement? Should it be? What would be its platform?

Too often transhumanists focus only on advancing technology and scientific discoveries, ignoring the important social and psychological aspects of accelerating change.

Political action can advance change as well, for example through legislation and funding that promotes life extension technologies, research into artificial intelligence, space exploration, nanotechnology and biotechnology. Also, legislation limiting these developments might be opposed at least in some cases. But too few transhumanists get involved in the political process.

So here we are in the year 2012 and the apocalypse is still happening. We saw the rise of Internet culture as the lines between the virtual and the physical were forever blurred. 2012 was the year that everything happened but it was also the year that nothing happened. We joined the masses in zombie flash mobs to compete for a shifting demographic: technoshamans turning into digital celebrities turning into social media coaches: insert something about storytelling: insert something about worldbuilding. Was it too late to stop the postmodern world from turning us all into Lolcats? Could we fight against the great mashup of nothing? Could the true geeks, freaks, thinkers, innovators, mutants, cyborgs, and future-gods unite for the final-harvest-of-whatever?
