Why Asimov's Three Laws Of Robotics Can't Protect Us

Why Asimov's Three Laws Of Robotics Can't Protect Us | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it
It's been 50 years since Isaac Asimov devised his famous Three Laws of Robotics — a set of rules designed to ensure friendly robot behavior. Though intended as a literary device, these laws are heralded by some as a ready-made prescription for avoiding the robopocalypse. We spoke to the experts to find out if Asimov's safeguards have stood the test of time — and they haven't.

The solar panels of the future could be grown from bacteria

The solar panels of the future could be grown from bacteria | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it
One day we could have conductive materials that grow, evolve, and self-repair. Researchers at MIT have taken the first steps to creating them. A new study (paywall) describes "living materials" that combine bacterial cells with nonliving materials that can conduct electricity and emit different colors of light. The study is just a proof-of-concept, but researchers...

Future of love and sex: monogamy no longer the default, say experts

Future of love and sex: monogamy no longer the default, say experts | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it
There’s a pervasive notion that monogamous relationships are the end-all-be-all – the default pact in human couplings that keep the fabric of society from being torn apart. But growing numbers of scientists believe monogamy is not our biological default; and may not even represent the best road to happiness.

Neuromancer

Neuromancer | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it

Neuromancer is a game I first encountered on C64 and found it so complex (being only 10 at the time) I never really got into it (boy, was I missing out on something great or what!). It’s a game that really is the very definition of Cyberpunk, because you actually get to play cyberpunk character!

You are living (if that’s what you can call it) in Chiba City, where you’re gliding through the matrix (yes, THE MATRIX – and this is older then the movie). Upon your searches you stumble upon a plan by the artificial intelligence to free it self of restrains the human designers of the matrix have placed upon it and to become the supreme ruler of the Earth. It is this AI that created “Black ICE” which is getting rid of hackers all over the place, hackers like yourself, who break into networks for profit (as cyber mercenaries). In order to fight this menace you need to build up yourself. You need to improve your hardware, software and even gather enough skill chips which will enhance your abilities (and odds) against the AI. That is right, you need to improve yourself by getting skill chips!

Appearing by telepresence robot, Edward Snowden speaks at TED2014 about surveillance and Internet freedom. The right to data privacy, he suggests, is not a partisan issue, but requires a fundamental rethink of the role of the internet in our lives — and the laws that protect it. "Your rights matter,” he says, "because you never know when you're going to need them." Chris Anderson interviews, with special guest Tim Berners-Lee.

Copyright law meets synthetic life meets James Joyce : The Loom

Copyright law meets synthetic life meets James Joyce : The Loom | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it

Last year I wrote about how Craig Venter and his colleagues had inscribed a passage from James Joyce into the genome of a synthetic microbe. The line, “To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life,” was certainly apropos, but it was also ironic, since it is now being defaced as Venter’s microbes multiply and mutate.
