Les Post-Sapiens sont le résultat de formes émergentes se dégageant petit à petit des multiples avatars que l'homme adopte de nos jours, du fait notamment de l'influence qu'exerce sur son évolution les nouvelles sciences et technologies.
The cold fusion dream lives on: NASA is developing cheap, clean, low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) technology that could eventually see cars, planes, and homes powered by small, safe nuclear reactors.
In the media these days, Artificial Intelligence (henceforth AI) is making a comeback. Kevin Drum wrote a long piece for Mother Jones about what the rising power of intelligent programs might mean for the political economy of the United States: for jobs, capital-labor relations, and the welfare state. He worries that as computer programs become more intelligent day by day, they will be put to more and more uses by capital, thereby displacing white-collar labor. And while this may benefit both capital and labor in the long run, the transition could be long and difficult, especially for labor, and exacerbate the already-increasing inequality in the United States. (For more in the same vein, here’s Paul Krugman, MosheVardi, Noah Smith, and a non-bylined Economist piece.)

Are drones not scary enough for you yet? How about this? A drone helicopter that spots you and identifies you as an intruder. It tells you to stop and put your hands behind your head. Instead, you keep coming. The drone then shoots you with barbed Taser darts that pump 80,000 volts into you. If you try to get up, it will continue pumping voltage into you until you submit and the authorities arrive.
Their politics run the gamut, from liberals to conservatives to anarchists. Their professions vary widely, from artists to physical laborers to programmers. Whatever their background, preferences, or professions, they have recently tripled the popula...
When Grindhouse Wetware set out to make open source cybernetic implants a reality, we knew it would be dangerous. Every challenge ever taken by humanity into the unknown has been met by many more failures than successes, and many more disasters than triumphs. January 30, 2014 Circadia was removed from Tim and post extraction testing took place. Below are our findings.
My workday is over. What do I want to do now? I picture calling my wife to suggest dinner at that nice Italian restaurant and imagine the taste of gnocchi quattro formaggi. Then I remember promising to look after the grandchildren that evening. My colleague at the desk next to me has no idea of this rich world unfolding in my head. This is the world that I call my consciousness, my mental state, my mind, or my thoughts. It is comfortably private, and I cannot imagine having an intelligent life without it. My behavior and pronouncements are but the tip of the iceberg that is my consciousness. Is this consciousness something that can be replicated? In our quest to build smarter computers and robots, will we one day develop machines that have an internal mental life comparable to our own?
Materials scientists have been eyeing spider silk as a potential supermaterial for years, but the stuff is notoriously difficult to produce in quantities. Now, recent breakthroughs in the production of synthetic spider silk could see this remarkable substance commercialized, and publicly available, sooner than expected.
On the Intergalactic Space Station, there is no such thing as night or day – only the cold; only darkness. To conserve energy, given their distance from the closest sun, the crew has to maintain limited station activity at all times, especially when most the crew is asleep. For Dr. Harry Boyd, however, it is the only time he can acquire answers to questions Captain “Rex” Mitchell would rather keep in the dark.
The internet is a tracking and monitoring machine. We will ceaselessly self-track and be tracked. We’re expanding the data sphere to sci-fi levels and there’s no stopping it because too many of the benefits we covet derive from it. Our central choice now is whether this surveillance is a secret, one-way panopticon -- or a mutual, transparent kind of 'coveillance' that involves watching the watchers...
In our 45 minute discussion, we covered the technological singularity, the role of open source and the hacker community in artificial intelligence, the risks of AI, mind-uploading and mind-connectivity, my influences and inspirations, and more.
