Veridical Engagement and Radical Enhancement

Veridical Engagement and Radical Enhancement | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it
This is the second post in my series on Nicholas Agar's new book Truly Human Enhancement. The book offers an interesting take on the enhancement debate. It tries to carve out a middle ground between bioconservatism and transhumanism, arguing that modest enhancement (within or slightly beyond the range of human norms) is prudentially valuable, but that radical enhancement (well beyond the range of human norms) may not be.

monkey in north carolina controls robot in japan using only its mind | Toronto Star | Post-Sapiens, les êtres technologiques | Scoop.it

This week we are talking to Miguel Nicolelis, a neuroscientist at Duke University.

For over 20 years Miguel has been blurring the line between science fiction and science fact, developing increasingly sophisticated ways of harnessing the thoughts of rats, monkeys, and humans to drive mechanical devices in the fascinating field of brain-machine interfaces.

In this week's ReThink clip Miguel describes how he and his collaborators managed to get a 5kg monkey in North Carolina control the movements of a 150kg robot located in Japan, using only the monkey’s thoughts. As he puts it, “It is physically generating movement out of brain waves.”

Miguel Nicolelis is Anne W. Deane Professor of Neuroscience and Professor of Neurobiology, Biomedical Engineering and Psychology at Duke University. He is currently working on developing a brain-machine interface that will enable a quadriplegic child to deliver the opening kick-off at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
