Computer engineering: Feeling the heat

Computer engineering: Feeling the heat | Post-high school plans - internships and engineering | Scoop.it
The more that microcircuits are shrunk, the hotter they get. Engineers are on the hunt for ways to cool off computing.
Christine's insight:

My thoughts:

This article talks about the problems computer engineers are facing as computers become larger and more complicated. Supercomputers are complex computers that can carry out an impressive number of tasks, all at the same time. However, such computers consume hundreds of megawatts of power and become so overheated that it draws the risk of melting itself. Compuer engineers are attempting to create a solution that will allow these computers to cool down so that its hard drive is not destroyed. Several engineers are mentioned within the passage and each talk about their ideas for how computers can be cooled down efficiently. Their methods each have flaws, of course, but as computers are becoming more complex and energy-consuming, a successful method to cool down these computers will be needed soon.

Paid vs. Unpaid Internships: Why Top Companies are Happy to Pay

My thoughts:

This article addresses the pros and cons of businesses paying their interns. First of all, if businesses do not pay interns, potential interns may choose a job that offers them no professional experience, but a stable salary that they need to pay for increasingly expensive college tuition. Offering an unpaid internship may attract interns that want the experience but aren't willing to put in their 100%. A bad intern may actually subtract value in a company, so companies are encouraged to pay their interns to attract the most hard-working interns that will benefit the company and add value instead of depreciating your business's value.

You did it! You scored that awesome internship. Your future is blossoming before your very eyes. The time to push outside of your academic comfort zone has arrived. Now it’s time to get some real-world work experience.
Christine's insight:

My thoughts:

This article talks about the importance of having a good attitude in the workplace and staying open-minded to trying new tasks. The author of the article encourages interns to make connections to the employees at the workplace and ask questions, as well as listen for advice. These connections can be valuable to building your career and allow you to seek out networking opportunities. Even if interns are assigned to one area, they should reach out to others and invite someone from a different department to have lunch with you or volunteer to assist with a company project that includes several departments. Also, interns should show their bosses that they can analyze a situation and come up with a solution because leaders solve problems, they don’t just perform tasks.

Computer Engineering Technology

Computer Engineering Technology | Post-high school plans - internships and engineering | Scoop.it

My thoughts:

Computer engineering technology is a field of engineering different than computer engineering. Computer engineers are responsible for designing and engineering all of the new hardware and software for their company, whereas computer engineering technicians usually work with engineers to bring to life the programs and hardware that the engineers create. Engineers often make higher pay and do more behind the scenes work, while technicians do the hands-on parts. With so many advancements in technology today, pursuing a career involving computers can help you maintain job security for the rest of your life. Despite the growing interest in the technology, there are very few technicians in this industry, so anyone who is interested in this field of engineering will be able to find many job openings in this industry.

Don't Make These 10 Internship Mistakes

Learn to shine, not stumble, during an internship.

My thoughts:

This article talks about common mistakes that interns make that could harm their reputation. In order to avoid making these mistakes, the author recommends interns to be aware of their surroundings and act accordingly. For example, if the workplace setting is very formal and your employees always speak with a quiet tone of voice, you should do the same. Getting an internship at a business is a privilege, and you should treat it as such. Seemingly trivial tasks that are given to you should be handled like it is an important task. That way, your employer can begin to trust you with more difficult and important tasks. It is also recommended to befriend fellow employees and not just other interns because your employees can give you career advice, help you connect to a future job, and provide strong references. Keeping in touch with your manager and co-workers can also benefit you because it will teach you how to maintain a professional relationship with others, which is a necessary skill once you start looking for a career.
